## Overview

The Richter Bevel Edge Chisel Set of 5 features cryogenically treated alloy steel blades ranging from 1/4" to 1" for superior hardness and edge retention. Each chisel is crafted with lightweight ash wood handles, reinforced with splitproof steel ferrules, delivering exceptional balance and comfort. Ready to use with minimal honing, this set is presented in a premium gift box, making it the ultimate choice for discerning woodworkers seeking professional-grade tools with timeless design.

## Description

Right after initial hardening, cryogenic treatment cools the steel down to very low temperatures by using liquid nitrogen to as low as −190 °C. This completes transformation of austenite, which increases both the hardness and toughness of the steel. Named after our founder Mr. Vaclav Richter, these chisels represent the highest quality of our manufacturing processes combining unique materials, heat treatment and machining in order to produce the finest tool for woodworkers. Every chisel is marked by our trademark RICHTER EXTRA.

Review: Amazing chisels!! - These are the best chisels I have used yet and I have used many over the years. Very minimal honing to prepare for use, if any. Usually it's the longest part of buy a set of chisels, these were a breeze and already very sharp out of the box. Great feel, balance and awesome looks... nice and shiny. Love them, I think this is the last set I will ever buy... Should last forever
Review: Came Flat and Sharp, stayed that way - These took very little lapping to bring the back to absolute flatness (any new chisel will take some) especially compared to standard Narex. They stay sharp way longer than standard Narex, without much fuss honing on diamond plates/compound. They take a blistering sharp edge when honed and stropped on green compound. The primary bevel being a few ticks under 25 degrees makes for easy paring cuts including in end grain but didn't exhibit the tendency to chip harder steel sometimes do when I tested busting through some glue lines and knots. Bevelled edges taper down to minimal lands which along with the slim cross section make for easy access into most recesses. Compared to a lie nielsen, which is about 50% thicker at the base, it's hard not to feel like the slimmer cross section of these Narex might be more delicate but, in use, I have not noticed a difference in flex or deflection perhaps owing to the greater hardness of the steel, which typically comes with greater stiffness. Perhaps it's the best of both worlds where they can probably take the abuse but the feel reminds me not to be ham fisted. The handle too is well shaped and finished and most comfortable in a push/paring grip, as opposed to optimized for chopping down grip like a stanley 750 or lie nielsen, but works well for all bench chisel tasks/orientations. Your grip preferences, more than anything else, may determine whether you simply like or love these as that feel in hand is a very personal and subjective. Summary: Good fit and finish. Steel is great. Shape is comfortable and versatile. Feel in hand should be good to great, depending on preferences. Value is unmatched as I haven't used anything comparable that doesn't cost 50%-100% more.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: What does the term "extra" indicate? (narex richter extra bevel edge chisels). not seeing this term usedby other suppliers to describe these chisels.**
A: It means they go the extra mile vs their standard and so-called "premium" lines of chisels, purportedly in homage to their founder. By comparison:
-- The steel is cryro treated to keep it tough enough to resist chipping at 3-4 points higher hardness and 2-3 degrees lower edge angle
-- The handles have a more versatile shape and better finish on a nicer wood vs stained, clunky, and occasionally misaligned
-- The side bevels extend further and have a more even grind
-- The steel is etched and polished vs left rough ground, painted, and lacquered
-- The ferule/socket feels stronger and stiffer in comparable sizes

All in all, they compare quite well with competitors that cost twice as much. You'd be able to pick based on your personal ergonomic preferences rather than fit, finish, or feature trade offs.

**Q: Are the handles different sizes?**
A: Nope. One uniform handle size/shape and if you like a paring grip predominantly, it's a good one

**Q: For those who have sharpened these successfully, what stone type (water, ceramic, diamond) did you use and what brand and grit?**
A: I use a similar method to the Rob Cosman method, Trend Diamond 1000, Norton 5000 Water Stone then Shapton Ceramic 16,000. I can tell they are harder than the IBC and Stanley Sweetheart 750’s. I couldn’t take the handles constantly falling out of my socket chisels, (LN and Stanley) so I bought this set to be my primary bench chisels in my Garage Workshop.

**Q: Are these sized true to imperial measurements or are they actually metric sizes (e.g. is the 1/2" chisel is a true 1/2" width or is it 12mm)?**
A: They are all marked with imperial measurements, although I have not measured them to confirm.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very nicely done box of chisels
*by B***L on February 17, 2026*

I’ve looked into several brands of chisels and this set have an amazing attention to detail. They are polished and look to need very little honing to make them super sharp. They curl the wood out of the box. They are absolutely beautiful.
