## Description

The APC by Schneider Electric BR24BPG Extended Run Battery Pack is the ideal companion for the APC Back-UPS Pro BR1500G UPS (uninterruptible power supply). The battery pack increases the duration of time that you can protect your electronic devices from damage and disconnect due to unexpected blackouts, voltage fluctuations, and other power disruptions. By connecting your valuable devices to the ACP BR24BPG battery pack, you extend the runtime of the BR1500G during an outage, so your computing or gaming system is available up to five times as long.

Review: This is a Great Combo (+ Some Notes on Changing the Batteries in Both Units!) - I don’t know which category this review will be labeled as, but this is a long term review of the “BR1500G + BR24BPG” combo. I just replaced all the original batteries (in both units) after a significant power “event” (lost one phase of my power) revealed a major loss of runtime; they lasted 4 years, 10 months. Before replacement I was able to determine that the original RBC124 in the BR1500G had failed, but that wasn’t revealed until I disconnected the BR24BPG and did a battery test on just the 1500G. I also tested the OG batteries from the 24BPG after they were removed. All tested good (but still glad I replaced them.) Once I replaced the bad RBC124, the UPS said the new one was bad! That status was OLD, for the bad battery just removed. The new battery must test OK to reset the status. It probably won’t test OK immediately. Give it an hour or so to settle in, then it will test OK and clear the bad battery warning. If it keeps testing bad, then worry! I’ve been through this a couple of times now on 2 similar units. The old adage “time heals all wounds” seems to apply in this case! If you decide to replace the batteries in the BR24BPG yourself, they are RBC17’s (12v, 9Ah); there are four of them. Not hard to do, but some experience recommended. There are cheaper “equivalent” replacement options available, but keep in mind that this is a bit of a project. For me, the fewer times I have to go through it the better! Getting into the BR24BPG case is a little tricky. There are videos available, but a couple of additional useful notes will help. Pry the front cover off from the bottom (there’s a square hole), a straight blade screwdriver will work. It will seem like you’re going to break it. That feeling won’t be alleviated until you get it completely off and find that nothing broke! Still, work carefully, using just enough force to get the job done. Next, the trick to “opening” the case (after removing all the screws, and back cover) is to SLIDE the “top” side back from the front, then lift it up and off. The “top” side is the one that’s “up” when you remove the 3 front screws. There will be resistance when trying to slide it, but keep working it until it finally does. Same precautions as before, but no screwdriver required. Overall, this is a great combo. It supplies tons of runtime with a fairly small footprint. My internet gateway and separate Wi-Fi (OG Orbi) run for 5-6 hours on battery. If my computer is on, that drops to about 3 hours. Impressive!
Review: Built for the task but be prepared for some noise initially - I purchased the external battery pack along with the Back UPS Pro 1500 unit for my work station and two large monitors which consume about 500 watts of power. I owned the predecessor Back UPS XS 1500 unit and external battery pack, so thought I would stick with APC since the other units lasted almost five years before the charger gave out. When I first installed the new unit, I anticipated hearing some fan noise for a day based on other reviews. However, the fan ran for three days straight, whether or not the equipment was running and it was much louder than I expected. I contacted APC and they told me the fan would run at all times, forever, whether or not anything was turned on. Fortunately, it turns out they were wrong. Last night, the fan finally turned off and has stayed off. Same thing today when I started my work station, dead quiet UPS. Bottom line, once you get past the initial charging period, the unit runs quietly. Note that if you only purchase the base unit, it contains two batteries, so it might run the fan for one day, but since the piggyback unit has four batteries, it takes an extra couple of days to charge.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: What kind of audible alarm does this unit have? Is it a simple beep and it over, or is it like a screeching banshee chasing its prey?**
A: Our model produces a continuous high-pitched beep that wouldn't stop until forced shutdown by depressing the power button for several seconds (like a laptop).

**Q: How long can the battery keep on a 800 watt machine when the power is off?**
A: Just because you have an 800W supply does not mean you are using 800 watts. I have an 800 watt supply and it typically uses only 90-110W. However I never got close to the advertised run times even with a brand new battery. I got about 75-80% of the advertised run times even with a calibrated 30% load. Also the run time that the machine reports is also a bit optimistic. When it was new it was claiming around 60 minutes and was getting about 50 at best. Now that the battery is 3 years old, it only reports about 28 minutes and but only can hang on about 18 minutes.

**Q: Description says surge protection is rated at 355 joules -- not much protection at that low rate. Is this correct? Thanks.**
A: You are correct. APC's site lists it at 354 joules. That is pretty low compared to a good power strip at nearly 10 times that rating. If you live in an area with surge problems (i.e. lightning), then you could plug the UPS into a good power strip first ... or rely on APC's connected equipment protection warranty.

**Q: If the input/output voltage for the addon battery pack is 12vdc, could a deep cycle be used by the unit in theory? The packs that power it are simply sealed wet cells anyway.**
A: The original battery pack is rated at 9Ah. The external battery pack is about 18Ah. Meaning the charging circuit is designed to manage safely a 24 Volt 27 Ah battery set safely. The UPS has a fan which start when required, so I think you could go up to a couple of 12 Volt 35 Amp AGM type battery in series without any risk but after that size I think it's too much for this UPS model and will take too much time to fully recharge the batteries and perhaps overheat it. Also keep in mind if you hook a USB cable to feed UPS status info to a computer, the UPS will report a false reserve time and will force to shut down the computer well before it's discharged.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Dependable when the Street Power Isn't
*by S***S on November 13, 2025*

I've used an APC battery back-up for eight years. During some recent power outages, it was necessary to remain operational for a longer time. This battery back was easy to add and has more than tripled available run-time. Check your APC battery back-up to ensure it is capable of this addition.
