## Description

'Albatross' marks the reunion after an 11 year hiatus from alt-rockers Big Wreck. On this highly anticipated third full-length album, Big Wreck founders Ian Thornley and Brian Doherty are back to doing things the way they did in the very beginning: writing and recording without any outside influence, and regardless of the tastes of the day.

Solid effort from an underrated band

I recently got back into this band and really like this album! Its hard to describe these guys, but they have sort of a 'Canadian rock' sound with a definite Zeppelin vibe & influence. They use a lot of 12 string guitars, non-standard tunings, and cool mixes of guitar parts that really reminds me of Page. I also think Ian Thornley sometimes sounds like Chris Cornell, although I don't think the music is very similar to Soundgarden. Ian's also a great guitar player! There are some great videos on U-tube for the song Control (and others) where he shows off his lead & jamming skills.I had the Pleasure and the Greed many years back and always liked it, but I didn't realize until recently that they got back together and released a couple new albums...

    Seven instant classics

*by J***Z on Reviewed in the United States on July 5, 2012*

Let me get the 'bad news' out first... the final four tracks here are okay, but compared to the first seven, they're not worthy of the Big Wreck name. Of course they are still solid rock songs, and played with great skill, but they just don't carry the soul and cleverness that I was expecting. Should have sold those songs to Nickelback. Back to the first half of the album; these are the clever, memorable, ass-kicking tracks that turn me on. The lyrics are typical Ian--generally literal and relatable enough to be interesting and paint a mental picture, but not so deep that it's just noise. The guitar work on the album lives up to all expectations, with a perfect mix of technical skill and creativity. The words and sounds come together to paint a picture and set a tone, which is a major selling point for Big Wreck and Ian Thornley's entire body of work. If they could somehow bring on a creative lyricist, they might be able to generate a nice buzz and following! As it is, I don't understand why BW never plays in Detroit, in fact I am kind of mad about it! I have never had the chance to see them live but I'm sure I would be an even bigger fan if I could. With a little publicity they could easily bring the house down on St. Andrews Hall.

    Big Wreck is back!

*by M***K on Reviewed in the United States on April 10, 2012*

YES YES YES!!! This was one of my favorite bands in high school and one of my favorite bands period. I missed them so much over the years and I listen to both the previous albums often. I didn't even know they had got back together and made a new album. I was so OVERJOYED when I came across this on Amazon. This album is every bit as good as their previous ones while not sounding derivative or stale. They have kept the big open sound that is distinctive of their music and as always there are lots of great riffs and hooks. it's surreal, almost like they never broke up if it wasn't for the 11 year stretch where there was no more Big Wreck. I can only hope that they continue making music together for awhile because I'll be looking forward to it all!
