Works perfectly for me - needs a price break for more than one - needs to be smaller

*by S***I on Reviewed in the United States on July 29, 2012*

Update - This one is the best of any I have tried. Works in all my vehicles without a problem. I've renewed for another year. More features that I even thought.Update2 - would be nice to have a 24V model for larger trucks that use a 24V electrical system.------I have tried most of the vehicle/cycle locators that are available here (Zoombak, Garmin GTU-10, Little Buddy, phone family locators), and the performance of the GoTrackEZ is right up there at the top.Unfortunately their price is right up there at the top as well - compared to Zoombak, Garmin and the others, the GoTrackEZ is significantly more expensive to purchase ($200), and significantly more expensive on a monthly basis ($25/mo) - but the performance is at the top of the heap also, with full history and frequent updates, so I guess it is one of those "you get what you pay for" experiences. While the monthly gets cheaper purchasing a year in advance ($20/mo), there is still no price break for multiple units unless you are a huge fleet. This is easily more than two times what the Garmin GTU-10 costs even with Garmin's deluxe data plan. That said, I like the GoTrackEZ better. The downfall of most of the battery powered locators is the battery itself (or compromises they make to extend the battery life). They all work better if they are hard-wired into the vehicle electrical system to keep them charged. This unit plugs into the OBDII port that all modern cars have, therefore using the car battery for the power supply. If the car is driven regularly the tiny power draw is a non issue. I have read a few claims that this drained someones battery, but I have had no issues even close to this and my car as a tiny battery.Recommendations to the GoTrackEZ folks: **You'd think that the next gen of this locator add add some simple circuitry to turn itself off after say detecting the battery at 11V to make everyone happy, but I am not an electrical engineer.** It would be a real plus if the next gen of this unit would be SMALLER as on my cars it sticks out to the point where I am concerned about a foot knocking it off and have purchased extension cables to make it protrude less. **The unit arrived quickly with minimal instructions (how much do you really need anyway, plug it in). Depending where your OBD port is, the unit might be well out of the way or extending a bit into the passenger space where it might get nudged, like in my case. I will probably put a velcro cable tie around it to keep it secure. The unit is not very big, but I wished it was smaller (along the Garmin GTU10 size). The set-up process is a little odd requiring a call and a separate purchase of a "monthly plan" to get it going. You would think this could all be done via the web site, but I suspect the company is small and growing. But you talk to real people in the good ol' USA and they seem to go out of there way to help resolve any issues you have and don't have a script to read. Very refreshing. They even seem to read Amazon reviews and reach out to comment or help. The set-up was quick and the site for keeping track of the unit is very polished and as a number of nice or unique features (speed alert, first trip of the day alert, starts, stops, ignition on/off). I must say the accuracy in my area is phenomenal - a few feet at most - you can easily find the parking space you left your car in.If you can accept the unit's requirement to plug into the ODB port (yes, I know they have other cable options to remote install it if you want) and the price/monthly both being at the top end of the "budget locator" market and price point, this is a very good choice and a clear functionality winner for me.The only think I would like is a package deal to get a price break for multiple units - one for each vehicle. I now have more than one of these units, one for each car, and there is no price break for repeat customers.

    Good but not perfect

*by J***O on Reviewed in the United States on April 27, 2012*

This product works great, it provides minute to minute tracking with mapping online. The big problem with it is that it drains the vehicles battery. Two of the three vehicles I have used it on have died because of the battery drain and required towing. It would be nice if it powered off when the vehicle is not in use. I don't need updates when the vehicle is not moving.

    Good product

Gotrack EZ works as promised. It has given our family peace of mind about how well an elderly relative is finding his way about.Installation couldn't be easier: just plug it in to your vehicle's OBDII port, which in newer cars is easily accessible underneath the dash near the steering wheel. In a '04 Corolla the Gotrack EZ is out of sight and out of the way. In a '09 Toyota Matrix the OBDII port position is higher on the dash and results in the unit being visible and possibly in the way of the driver's leg. Gotrack customer service suggested ways I could make such an installation less problematic, but since I bought the Gotrack for the Corolla I did not try them.Once plugged in the unit started reporting the car's position without any additional work.Unlike some GPS trackers you are not tied in to a long term contract with penalties for early termination. Gotrack offers 3 and 6 month prepaid service at about $22/month. You can resell the unit and the new owner can start new service at any timeI have found Customer Service and Sales to be easy to deal with and very responsive. The website where you view location information is generally well thought out. The user can easily find both the current position of the vehicle and records of past positions and vehicle speed at each position. In fact you can track multiple vehicles if you wish. Like any GPS/map system the data isn't perfect -sometimes the street number will be incorrectly reported (but close to the correct number), and sometimes the position will be off by 50 ft or so- but if you accept these shortcomings the data is excellent.Several people can log on and view vehicle information at any time (I did not try to see the maximum number of users or maximum number of vehicles).Vehicle position is reported once a minute unless you manually request a position report. You can define a circle around a location (I have 6 circles: home, store, bridge to island...) that will trigger an email notification whenever the vehicle enters or leaves that area. You also can have an automatic email sent whenever the vehicle first moves each day. And you can be notified each time the vehicle exceeds a user set speed limit.During the first two weeks of use I saw changes to the website that showed Gotrack is constantly improving their product. A new feature, not yet explained, apparently allows the user to set notifications for whenever a vehicle needs maintenance.Although I have managed to use the product and service very effectively, I do wish there were a FAQs or help area on the website that would explain some of the information that is presented, and that would suggest ways to get more out of the product.
