## Description

From the manufacturer Echo Express SE IIIe - 3-slot Desktop Thunderbolt 3 Expansion System for PCIe Cards Connect Three Full-height, Half-length+ PCIe Cards to Computers with Thunderbolt 3 Ports Connect PCIe Cards - Use multiple high-performance PCIe cards with any computer with a Thunderbolt 3 port. Three PCIe 3.0 x8 Slots - Supports three full-height, half-length+ (up to 7.75 inches long), single-width cards, or one double-width card plus one single-width card. 40Gbps Thunderbolt 3 Interface - Offers 2750 MB/s of PCIe bandwidth, doubling the performance capabilities of Thunderbolt 2. Pro Performance. Compact Design - Takes up little space on the desktop, but large enough to support nearly every Thunderbolt-compatible non-GPU PCIe card at full performance. Two Thunderbolt 3 Ports - One port connects to computer; second port supports daisy-chaining of up to five additional Thunderbolt peripheral devices. Remarkably Quiet - Temperature-controlled, variable-speed fan automatically and quietly cools the cards. Energy Saver Mode - Powers on/off automatically with the computer. Rugged Aluminum Housing - Provides robust and secure protection. Pro Power - Auxiliary PCIe power connector for a power-hungry card; daisy chain port provides up to 15W of power to connected peripherals. Nearly Every Thunderbolt-Compatible, Non-GPU PCIe Card Supported Smaller than the 3-slot Echo Express III-D (Thunderbolt 3 Edition), the Echo Express SE IIIe is still large enough to support nearly every Thunderbolt 3 compatible card available. With its three x8 slots, the SE IIIe supports PCIe 3.0, PCIe 2.0, and PCIe 1.1 cards up to 7.75 inches long. Three PCIe 3.0 Slots for Demanding Professional Needs Echo Express SE IIIe’s PCIe 3.0 x8 slots support three half-length+, full-height, single-width PCIe cards, or one single-width card plus one double-width card. Double-Width? ‍ Some specialty cards, such as RME’s HDSPe MADI FX, Blackmagic Design’s DeckLink 4K Extreme, and the Lynx AES16e 50, include a daughter card that mates with and provides additional external connections to the main card. Included at No Extra Charge - Thunderbolt 3 Cable with ThunderLok 3 clip Sonnet includes a Thunderbolt 3 (40Gbps) cable that, unlike some other cables, transfers data at Thunderbolt 3’s full 2750 MB/s bandwidth, and supports up to 100W of Power Delivery (PD). Sonnet also provides a ThunderLok 3 Thunderbolt connector retainer clip that prevents accidental cable disconnections—just slide it over one end of the cable, and then plug in the connector and secure it to the chassis by turning a thumbscrew. Because of its unique design, ThunderLok remains on the cable so it won’t get lost when not in use. Power to Spare Perfect for AJA Kona 5 Cards or Bluefish 444's Epoch and More! Echo Express SE IIIe includes an auxiliary PCIe power connector, enabling you to install a card requiring extra power, such as the AJA Kona 5 or Blackmagic DeckLink 4K Extreme 12G, and Bluefish444’s Epoch and KRONOS SDI cards. Three PCIe 3.0 x8 slots 6-Pin Auxiliary Power Connector Ultra-Quiet - Perfect for Noise Sensitive Enviornments Although thin Mac, Windows, and Linux computers with Thunderbolt 3 ports offer processing power to spare, for many users (such as pros in the creative fields) onboard processing power alone is not enough. Sonnet’s Echo Express SE IIIe is a compact, desktop Thunderbolt 3 to PCIe card expansion system that enables you to connect three professional PCIe cards at the same time to any computer with Thunderbolt 3 ports. The Echo Express SE IIIe is designed to be ultra-quiet so that it can be comfortably used in noise-sensitive environments. Its enclosure is ventilated front and back to facilitate airflow over the cards bya large, quiet, temperature-controlled fan to efficiently cool the system. The fan automatically speeds up and slows down smoothly as needed—there’s no guesswork in deciding which fan speed to select. Mac Compatibility Mac (Intel) with Thunderbolt 3 ports Mac (M1) with PCIe cards that have M1 compatible drivers Mac with a Thunderbolt 2 or Thunderbolt port with an Apple Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter plus a Thunderbolt 2 cable (both sold separately) macOS 10.12.6+ macOS Big Sur compatible Windows Compatibility PC with Thunderbolt 3 or Thunderbolt 4 ports Windows 10 (64-bit Edition Version 1909 or greater, see note) Linux Compatibility Linux computer with Thunderbolt 3 ports Linux Kernel 5.0+

Review: I did get DIRTY and USED unit instead of NEW! And without Thunderbolt cable = UNUSABLE!!! - I'm very disappointed - see my attached photo documentation. Unit Sonnet sent me was poorly packed, the card board is broken on many places, but what's most important - instead of new unit they sent me clearly USED one, DIRTY (I tried to clean that up but it's baked into the surface). And included cable is some poor quality USB-C only and NOT THUNDERBOLT cable, that's why I get in macOS message I should connect it to Thunderbolt port. My MacBook Pro M1 MAX has ONLY Thunderbolt ports. Fortunately I have here also dock from Sonnet so I tried the TB cable from the dock and it works. But overall now I have to invest money to TB cable to be able to use this Sonnet box at all, I have dirty unit and very bad feeling. Very sad Sonnet!!! And now I found the second Thunderbolt port for daisy chaining is NOT WORKING AT ALL despite I have Sonnet 10G connected!!!
Review: Pretty cool enclosure to expand your laptop connectivity - I’ve been using this for the past couple of months now and I’m pretty happy with it. I spent the first couple of days doing some troubleshooting with it and after some google searching, I discovered that I didn’t have the latest thunderbolt drivers installed as I had previously thought (so make sure you do that and have the latest bios updates as well). After the driver update, everything was working smoothly...well, almost. The function I had the most trouble with was video capture using a PCIe HDMI capture card. The first one I tried was the Elgato HD60 pro, but had a very difficult time trying to capture an input signal. I tried using a similar card by SIIG, but saw identical results. After I did some reading up on the specs for HDMI and Thunderbolt 3, I came to the conclusion that there’s simply not enough bandwidth to accommodate the HDMI input signal, display port output signal and all USB devices when they're connected. Thunderbolt 3 is advertised to have 40Gbits of bandwidth which is theoretical, while the actual bandwidth is at 22Gbits. 8Gbits is given priority allocation to the first connected display which cuts your available bandwidth to 14Gbits to accommodate the rest of your devices. This might be doable with a video capture card using the HDMI 1.4 spec (which uses 14Gbits of bandwidth), but you’d be pushing your luck if you’re driving an external display while trying to record an incoming HD signal simultaneously. The HDMI 2.0 spec allows for bandwidth usage at 18Gbits which makes using a PCIe based video capture card impossible (unless no other devices were connected), so you’re better off using an enclosure you can dedicate a capture card to or get an external one that connects via USB 3. I went with an external one by Mirabox, which gave me the flexibility to use my pen display, audio interface and remaining USB devices while capturing an incoming HD signal. Would I recommend this enclosure? Yes, to anyone who is looking to assemble a custom Thunderbolt dock as I did.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: If i used this for adaptec raid controller, will performance be the same as if installed on the server motherboard?**
A: We expect the Adaptec RAID controllers to have an adequate cache to support Thunderbolt performance that is similar to motherboard performance.

**Q: Is it possible to use it with pro tools hdn card and aja lhi, with a new macstudio?**
A: Hello Michael, The ProTools HDX card does not fit in the Echo Express SEIIIe. You would need an Echo III, which supports the full-length HDX card and works with the M1 Macs.

**Q: Will this work with older server class sas/sata raid cards - specifically lsilogic sas9260 or other cards from that generation?**
A: You would have to ask the card maker whether their driver is Thunderbolt compatible, which usually means that the driver needs to gracefully handle hot plug/unplug. Drivers that cannot handle hot plug/unplug may still work if you plug/unplug the Thunderbolt chassis from the computer only when the computer is shut down.

**Q: Will this work on a Dell PC?**
A: Thunderbolt drivers are provided by Intel, so yes, it should work

### ⭐⭐⭐ Nur beschränkt nutzbar
*by T***K on 3 February 2022*

Passt nur für Karten mit kürzerer Kontaktleiste (sowieso nur eingeschränkte Länge), daher für mich leider nicht brauchbar.
