Review: but also with my somewhat old-fashioned contemporaries such as Ivan Doig and Amitav Ghosh — a good tale is still a good tale - My father gave Doubleday's two volumes of the Holmes stories to me and my younger brother one Christmas when we were young. I read both books through when I was about 12, maybe 13. When my brother finished Vol I, I reread all those stories at night by flashlight under the covers. I ended up, somehow, with both volumes after my brother left for college. When my oldest daughter was 12 or so, she found them on the bookshelf at home, asked me about them, and began reading. She finished the first volume of stories and was reading Vol. II when she lost the book somewhere. She's 41 now, and I've never replaced Vol. II on the space on the shelf that has been waiting to join its other half, Vol. I. So, I've finally purchased Vol. II. Holmes is somewhat outdated today, in the face of modern detective stories, which are almost all expanded into novels since Dorothy Sayers' books and the other "closed room" stories. I thought I might find Conan Doyle a little overly precious today (2017), and there is some of that (late Victorian England had its virtues, but also its arrogance, more than a little appalling today except for those who refuse to read the last chapters of _Wealth of Nations_, but ... when I began reading the Vol. II stories, I quickly fell under Holmes' spell and into his foggy London clime on Baker Street and in the dingy recesses of that city. This surprised me not a little. I keep up mostly with modern and post-modern writers, but also with my somewhat old-fashioned contemporaries such as Ivan Doig and Amitav Ghosh — a good tale is still a good tale, and I'm not a snob about these things. But, I find myself whole-heartedly in Holmes' world again. I'm 13 again and
Review: Wonderful, Cheap Collection of Holmes - This version (the Barnes & Noble Classics Series) is an affordable and complete (in two volumes) collection of Doyle's most popular series of work: Sherlock Holmes's mysteries. Holmes's popularity has survived more than a century and shows no signs of fading, as he is a key character--both recognized and enjoyed--in modern culture as he ever was. Although there are many versions of these stories available, the B&N Classic Series is a recommended consideration for buyers, especially those who don't have their heart set on a hard cover edition. Happy reading...
