Review: 5-Star Book for Newtonian Physics, 0-Star Book for No Mention of Relativity or Quantum Mechanics - Super Simple Physics is an excellent book to introduce a middle school student to Newtonian physics. It is extremely well-illustrated and organized, with easy-to-understand examples that relate to everyday life. It does a great job of covering the depth and breadth of Newtonian physics in summary form with occasional simple math examples requiring no more than a basic knowledge of how to manipulate an algebraic equation (it explains how when it does so) and simple trigonometry using a calculator. The problem is, AFAICT, that there is zero mention of relativity (general or special) and quantum mechanics. There should be a section where the limits of Newtonian physics are mentioned as to how things break down at the level of very small or the level of very massive objects or things traveling near the speed of light. Rutherford and Bohr get a brief mention in passing; Einstein gets none. Super Simple Physics could refer the interested reader to other introductory books on relativity or quantum mechanics. DK has an excellent overview book for the layman/secondary school student with beautiful illustrations of concepts in quantum mechanics entitled Simply Quantum Physics (a separate series from Super Simple books). I haven't found a similar book yet for an aspect of relativity. The perceived paradoxes of special and general relativity and quantum mechanics are among the knowledge that can make physics fascinating. Too bad that DK Books does not offer a little bit of that cheese for the young reader to nibble on in the Super Simple Physics book, which is otherwise a wonderful book that I highly recommend to introduce a middle school student to physics, perhaps in more interesting fashion than they'll experience in school. I have several complaints about the Kindle Edition and desertcart's PC Kindle Reader. The Windows Kindle Reader has been dumbed down so it's not possible to set a bookmark or search. I can do both on my iPhone Kindle Reader (but the iOS reader never gives me any search results!). For the Kindle Edition, the lovely illustrations are best appreciated on a large screen and without a large screen, some of the text displays in very small font on a phone. Maybe the difficulty of reading a Kindle book on a Windows computer is caused by lack of demand for a PC reader or is perhaps an attempt to induce the reader to buy Kindle devices or larger-screened Fire devices on desertcart.
