It seems counterintuitive, but the most stable way to use the mat is with the ridges down so you're standing on the smooth side, grips the floor to stop it from moving. **Q: Is this mat thick enough to do sit ups comfortably? The flooring under the mat would be hard woood.** A: Yes. The mat is thick and I use it on wood floor for yoga, planks, sit ups, etc. **Q: can this be cut into 1" strips with a knife?** A: There's not much you can't do with a properly sharpened knife.
