The electrical wiring used in the construction of the houses we live in is the most important from a safety standpoint and is also another good example of the difference in electrical conductors. The cost of producing copper reached an outrageously high amount during the seventies. It suddenly became one of the most expensive materials used in the construction of new residential and commercial building projects. Aluminum wiring became an inexpensive alternative to the much higher priced copper wiring and was used extensively in new construction. Everything seemed fine UNTIL relatively new homes started burning down. The cause of these fires was quickly linked to the all aluminum wiring being used. The reason why has already been explained in the other answers but in a nutshell, the aluminum wiring is such a poor conductor of electrical current that anywhere the aluminum conductors were cut and spliced or connected to a switch or outlet, extra measures had to be taken to ensure the connection point was tightly secured. Copper clad aluminum or CCA became an acceptable compromise for wiring in most types of new construction. It is made in China. The cables are very flexible and surprisingly light in weight. The main reason is this is aluminum wire that is copper coated. Pure copper is better but it is much heavier and way more expensive. This aluminum will do just fine and why travel with extra weight?Another reason for it's flexibility is 7 cores of 60 strands of wire are in there and with no corrosion as you can see in the photos. These are labeled as 2 gauge wire and I would say they are. The package states these cables are rated at 800 amps. I would not want to test that. These are more than capable to jump most vehicles and should handle high amps for very short periods of time. Sure beats my old jumper cables that turned out to be 12 gauge wires!These measure at least 16 feet. In the photo it shows just under but I could not get the wire to fully straighten out.The large alligator clips are easy to open but have enough tension in them and should fit any car battery. The crimp that the wire attaches to is good enough and looks better attached than other cables I've seen especially my old one that this new cable replaces.I should have bought this one a long time ago.
