Review: Incredible growth! - I've tried florescent, HPS, and MH, and nothing has caused my plants to grow as quickly and densely as this LED light. There's a LOT of bunk LED lights out there that either use weak LEDs, incorrectly focused LEDs, poorly selected spectrums, etc, but this definitely is not one of them. I wasn't sure I bought into all of HydroGrow's literature on their webpage, but now I'm sold. This light handily beat out any growth I was seeing on my old 400 watt HPS or MH bulbs, and my harvests are bigger from a smaller space. The only thing to be aware of is it's modest coverage area since the intensity of the light towards the edges of it's reaches does drop off VERY quickly (because this fixture focuses its light very intensely). But even in the "shadows" of the edge of its reaches, everything grows very happily. Also, one other thing to consider is the noise of the light. The LEDs are cooled by two fans which are really quite loud considering the silent fans available for computers these days. I'd have replaced them with some of those if it didn't void the warranty, and is something I'll likely do once that does expire. All told, this is easily one of the best lights around.
Review: Less Expensive Alternative With Performance Equal To HID / HPS System - For blooming plants, I successfully used high intensity discharge (HID) lamps, specifically metal halide and high-pressure sodium (HPS) for over a decade. Unfortunately, the increasing cost for electricity to run a 1000W light twelve hours a day, plus $100 annually to replace the bulb, became too much to pay for a hobby that produces no income. The joy of having blooming plants in the home year around, plus the peace that comes with starting seeds, taking cuttings, transplanting and nurturing plants that burst with big beautiful blooms, led me to explore less expensive options. One choice considered was going with less wattage, like running a 400W or 600W HPS instead of 1000 to reduce the required amount of electricity. There would still be an annual cost to replace bulbs, plus the added upfront cost of a new ballast. Workable, but still more money than I want to spend on myself and my hobby. I'd been fascinated years earlier by the possibility of a using LEDs. The idea of a less expensive fixture, lower wattage consumption and bulbs lasting ten years versus one was super appealing. The answers I found to the big question of how different LED light qualities influence flowering of day-length-sensitive species were contradictory; I wasn't ready to risk and experiment for myself. Wanting back into my hobby, I explored the LED possibility again. I again mainly found tons of information that was contradictory with different manufacturers claiming their specific array and resulting spectrum was THE optimum. Continued searching led me to stumble on some hobbyists' LED gardening journals. "Extreme LED Grow Lights" had captured more than a few fans. Extreme LED seems to have answered the questions and produced lighting fixtures that has many fans. Based on actual user reviews and accolades, I decided to go for it. At the heart of the popularity and ingenuity of Extreme LED Grow Lights is the ability to adjust LED intensity for individual desired response. I can choose high, medium or low intensity in accordance with stages of the plants' growth, be they seedlings, in vegetative growth or blooming. The color spectrum is optimized to provide the right amounts of reds and blues at the right time. I know next to nothing regarding the effects of applying different qualities of light, except that it's important to be able to adjust it as a plant ages. After taking cuttings and rooting them, I've had new plants growing for the last 6 weeks. The biggest difference so far is working within a smaller footprint; I have a third fewer plants sitting under the new light at its highest intensity. I'm rotating my plants by a quarter turn each morning when the light comes on to ensure even spectrum coverage. So far, the stages of growth are right on track with no visible difference in the number or size of developing blooms. Time will tell. I won't know for another 6-8 weeks whether or not this Extreme 126X-PRO LED Grow Light is the equal to of HPS lighting. from a color spectrum and light intensity perspective, my opinion is that it is so far performing every bit as good as my old 1000W HP, and at a lower operating cost. So far, I'm happy overall with my choice. If my opinion changes for the worse or better, I'll note it here later. For now, I like: 4 Stars.
