It does illuminate the screen during the last minute of any of the three timers, so that is nice, and you can always just touch a button and the screen will illuminate. It was problematic, every so often would have to take it apart and clean the keys so they'd work better. The speaker was not all that loud either. But it was working for what we needed. Well the old one speaker totally stopped working, tried to replace it without success. Still wanted a triple timer so did a search and found this one. So far this one seems good, the speaker on max setting is loud can hear it from the other rooms. Kinda miss having it show the time when not in use but it's not a big deal. The display is hard to see if the light isn't hitting it right if the backlight is off, unlike the old timer where it was easy to see. But it's easy to turn on the backlight, I've been using the timer select button. My wife is annoyed by the location of the 0 button and I agree it's not in a good spot, but I can see why they did it that way since they changed the start/stop and clear/memory button layout too. Hopefully the buttons on this one won't need to be cleared periodically to make them work better like the old one did. The old one ate through batteries too, finally decided to start using rechargeables with it.
