Which I'm very happy for. The journal itself was in an envelope, however it was within a burlap pouch, which was also wrapped in plastic. I was so relieved about that, since it rained the night it was delivered. It's very thick... Full of pages. Many, many pages. And it looks like you can replace these pages once they're filled up with no real issues. You'd probably need to remove some stitching. It is GENUINE leather. The smell reminds me of a tack shop (I grew up with horses, so this is comforting). The company helps children in Africa and believes in being eco-friendly, which really shows in their craftsmanship. This is by far the most gorgeous item I've ever ordered off desertcart. I already had a coworker order one as well. These are non refillable. I have actually thought of changing out the paper since this is very light. My preferred would be a 140 lb watercolor, Arches, Fabriano, or Moulin du Roy. If and when you decide to do this, you will actually have to β€œre-make” this item. Are you ready for that? Since I do not have a leather supply near me, I was thinking, I could get leather shoelaces at the cobbler, or a shoe store. You will have to cut the leather knots, then prepare the paper you are using for a replacement. I rip my own so I will have deckled edges. Then you have to fold it, and make the holes. If using 140 lb paper, you will not be able to fit as many. Are you sure you want to do this? I have a few more suggestions: leave this journal as it is. Record you daily life. Enjoy it as it is. A journal is meant to be a record. Make a daily entry. A drawing, painting, or just a memory of the day. My second tip is to make some simple books of your own. Find your special paper, go to an office supply store, or online and get some loose ring binders. You can make covers out of anything. Decorate as you like. Cut up Amazon boxes for cardboard. This way, you can take out any pages you don’t like. I take off all the expandable rings in any notebook or journal I buy and replace with the ring binders. My third and final suggestion is to either watch online, or better yet, take an in person journal making class at an art store or college. I am considering that option myself. One of my local colleges offers everything from crash courses to intensive Coptic binding classes. **Q: Is the paper parchment paper? Like a paper-pulp? I want a really handmade look** A: Yes from what I gather. It is actually like 5 mini pads (like they can only stitch 20 sheets to make the 100 or 200 or whatever pages) to make the big one almost like really old books.Totally hand done my husband loved his and said he felt like Indiana jones with an ancient notebook but it's crafted well!! **Q: For those using it, how well does it stay open when laid flat?** A: Mine doesn't stay open without holding it.
