I don't think it provides any use without the dock. **Q: Is this compatible for use on Android smart phones?** A: This is a card reader, to read files from various memory cards. It is intended to connect to a computer, either Windows or Mac or even Linux. I have never tried to connect it to my Android cell. Cells have limited storage and power compared to a computer, so I do not see a reason to copy files from a memory card to a cell phone. **Q: What is the maximum theoretical card storage capacity supported by this reader?** A: It does support 2tb when format32 is used. I have a 4tb drive that is being used for my video files. Keep in mind that I make sure that the video files and photos are below 4GB( optimal 3.8 is a very good size) My 5Tb partitioned into 2 tb drive with the remaining 750GB ( I suspect it, that it's over provisioning.
