## Overview

The Sonnet Echo Express SE1 is a compact, lightweight Thunderbolt 3 expansion chassis that enables professional users to connect a single full-height, half-length PCIe 3.0 x8 card to any Mac or Windows PC with Thunderbolt 3 ports. Delivering up to 40Gbps bandwidth and featuring dual Thunderbolt 3 ports for daisy-chaining, it’s ideal for high-performance audio, video, and data workflows in tight desktop spaces.

## Description

Product description One PCIe 3.0 Slot and Space for a Daughter Card The Echo Express SE I - Thunderbolt 3 Edition features an x8 PCIe slot, and supports one half-length+, full-height, single- or double-width PCIe card. Double-width? Some pro video and audio interface cards, such as Blackmagic Design’s DeckLink 4K Extreme, and RME’s HDSPe MADI FX card, include a daughter card that mates with and provides additional external connections to the main card. The daughter card occupies the adjacent space without filling a PCIe slot. Thunderbolt 3 — The USB C That Does It All The Echo Express SE I - Thunderbolt 3 Edition includes two Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports; the first connects it to your computer, while the second supports daisy chaining of up to five additional Thunderbolt peripheral devices to a single port on your computer. The SE I includes 10Gbps USB 3.1 Gen 2 support, meaning you can connect a USB device to the second port using the proper cable or adapter. The SE I also provides full support for connecting two 4K displays @ 60Hz or one 5K display @ 60Hz(4). For connected devices requiring extra power, 15 watts is provided to connected bus-powered devices(7). Nearly Every Thunderbolt 3-Compatible PCIe Card Supported Designed to accommodate cards up to 7.75 inches long and measuring a compact 5.6 inches wide by 8.6 inches long by 3.5 inches tall, the Echo Express SE I - Thunderbolt 3 Edition has a small footprint, yet it is large enough to support nearly every Thunderbolt 3-compatible PCIe 3.0, PCIe 2.0, and PCIe 1.1 card available. Do you have a card in mind but aren’t sure it’s compatible? We’ve worked closely with PCIe card manufacturers to provide a list of compatible cards on our supporting PCIe Card Thunderbolt Compatibility Chart. The chart provides a list of cards that have been tested to be recognized over a Thunderbolt connection and compatible with Thunderbolt technology requirements. Thunderbolt 3 (40Gbps) Cable and ThunderLok 3 Included To connect the Echo Express SE I - Thunderbolt 3 Edition to your computer, Sonnet includes a 0.5-meter Thunderbolt 3 (40Gbps) cable, and a ThunderLok 3 Thunderbolt connector retainer clip(8) to secure the cable to the Echo chassis. Accidental cable disconnection can lead to data loss. Sonnet’s ThunderLok 3 is easy to install and use—just slide it over one end of the cable, and then plug in the connector and secure it to the chassis by turning a thumbscrew. Because of its unique design, ThunderLok remains on the cable so it won’t get lost when not in use.

Review: Works with audiophile sound USB cards - I am using the Sonnet Echo as a PCIe extension to my Macbook M2 to house an audiophile USB sound card. Works fine, the Mac Audio MIDI Setup sees the DAC through the Sonnet. I'm aware that the box works with both Pink Faun USB bridges and at least one JCat USB card.
Review: Works well and compact - but noisy fan needs replacement and no power switch - I am using this to convert my old Areca 1880i RAID controller to an external Thunderbolt 3 RAID card by adding a PCI bracket with SFF-8088 connections to the SFF-8087 connections on the RAID card. The enclosure looks nice, is compact, and the power brick isn't too large. However, for the minuses, the included 60mm fan is somewhat loud, and uses this strange metal bracket to direct the airflow, which seems to be rather pointless. There's plenty of space for a larger fan, depending on the size of your 2nd PCI bracket or daughtercard, so I replaced it with an 80mm be Quiet Silent Wings 2 fan, which improved the noise profile a lot. The 80mm fan can only screw in one corner unless you drill some holes. For me, a single screw held in tight was stable enough. For the other minus, there is no power switch - it is always on, but will turn on/off when your computer turns on/off. Fair enough, but sometimes I don't want the additional fan noise and would like to manually turn it off. I plan on hooking it up to a power strip with individual toggles to fix that issue. Overall, I'd say it works very well for it's intended purpose. Originally I was thinking of getting a eGPU enclosure, but those are very large and with overspecced power supplies - this enclosure is perfect for smaller PCIe cards like RAID, capture card, etc. I'm glad I went with this one.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Does this work with the razer blade if I use a 1050ti?**
A: This product is not designed to work with graphic cards because it does not have adequate power. Our product for graphic cards is our eGFX Breakaway Box

**Q: How much power (in wattage) is being sent to the pci-e lane?**
A: The SEL and SE I both send the PCIe specification to the x4 PCIe 2.0 slot: 25 Watts.

**Q: Is a Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) cable included?**
A: Yes, all of Sonnet's Thunderbolt 3 and Thunderbolt 4 products include a Thunderbolt cable.

**Q: Would this work if i used a thunderbolt 3 to 2 adapter (i have a macbook pro 2013)and stuck a graphics card in it**
A: This would not be a very good product to use a graphics card with and especially if you are going to adapt it to thunderbolt 2. I do not believe that this is a fast enough port for modern day graphics cards.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Works with the Vive wireless adapter card on my laptop!
*by J***. on December 5, 2018*

I have an HTC Vive and I've been researching for weeks about how to get the wireless adapter to work on a laptop. I found this solution in a forum and gave it a try. I have a high-end alienware laptop which obviously has no internal PCI-e slots for use. This device worked great and it now allows me to play VR games wireless. Warning, do not buy this without researching first. I read that Alienware is compatible for certain models and if you update your BIOS, but it certainly won't work for all gaming laptops. I have a 17 r4 and I know it also work with the r5 models. P.S. to Sonnet: Consider marketing this capability for compatible laptops; there are tons of forums where frustrated Vive owners vent about the useless adapter that was released because they believe it is a PC-only card.
