Placed just inside of the structure, and sometimes they catch a little rain which does not ruin them, but continuous rain would probably not be a good idea. They work, though, even placed where I have them; definitely deter the carpenter bees. **Q: Do these work with mud wasps as well as paper wasps?** A: For me these work great as a resting spot for the wasps before the venture to the hummingbird feeders. So no, they don't work at all. **Q: Will these deter honey bees from drinking at my pool?** A: I am going to say probably not since I still have bees and wasps visiting my yard just continuously or nesting. However they may help with the amount of bees and time they spend in your yard. So I dont want to discourge you. Perhaps more research or ask a beekeeper for a tip or two. (If your local grocery store or health food store carry honey from a bee keeper in your area you can get their info from the jar of honey.
