**Q: To what size can they open?**
A: Mine open about 11 millimeters or about 3/8 of an inch

**Q: Where are they made**
A: Imprecise jaw closure, and non-concentric pivot rivet punch, rule out Germany, U.S., Japan, Scandinavia, or Taiwan. Most likelythey are Chinese, Indian, or Pakistani. Good spring, and they are practical for my purposes. I closed jaws and filed with Swiss pattern file and then polished on 1050 RPM wheel w/600 grit rouge. Jaws appear to be heat treated and tempered, so go slow on the polishing wheel.  Good grip. Price was right. ' Would rather have precision hand tools, but couldn't find any other offering. Have you tried Travers Tool?
