The metal portion of the pop up typically, as did ours, screws off with only hand pressure. The old one will just peel off like a rubber band. If its tight just stick something pointy underneath it and pull it off. Install the new on in reverse. You should be able to do that just with your hand. Just make sure it's not twisted in anyway and in the groove.
