Review: 535 a great quality American made folding knife - Very smooth folding action. Perfectly centered. Fantastic lockup. Rock solid. Absolutely zero up/down or side to side blade play. Great details with the blue anodized thumb studs, barrel spacers and black coated titanium axis lock bar. A minimalist steel liner design frame the axis lock mechanism. Phosphor bronze washers. Clever and small deep carry pocket clip with a wear resistant parkerized (vs painted) finish. Extremely slicey s30v premium blade steel grind. A beautiful swedge at the top of the blade aids is its piercing capabilities. Of course the hole vs the sum of its parts – a very well-engineered light weight carry. Regardless of weight, the knife still feels quite solid in the hand. Blue injection molded glass-filled nylon-based plastic polymer (Benchmade read: “Grivory”) handle scales offer a satisfying grip texture. Easily light and compact enough to serve as a backup blade option inside any bugout bag. However, still very well suited in most any EDC environment. The terms “high-speed and low-drag” come to mind. But in a good way… vs the mall ninja, car door batoning, z-hunter kind of way (node to The Shabazz). A high performance folding knife very much akin to a light weight high performance sports car. Ultimately a very highly recommended purchase. Probably the only knife that most will truly ever need on a day to day basis. If you’re considering the basic configuration Benchmade mini grip(s) or Spyderco Delica 4. Then you own it to yourself to at least strongly consider the Benchmade 535 Bugout. One of the very best in the entire Benchmade line up.
Review: The perfect knife to have with you at all times. - Light weight, beautifully crafted and extremely sharp.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Are you an authorized seller, will benchmade honor the lifetime guarantee?**
A: I've never once had Benchmade all me for a receipt when sending in a knife for service...not once. They simply verify that the knife is legit and not a clone and then fix whatever is wrong, and then return your knife to you. I've sent in probably 30 over the years, and they've never asked for my receipt to proceed I bought it from a authorized reseller. They realize that people sell these so much on the secondary market, that it would be impossible to have a receipt for every single one-plus who saves a receipt from 5-10 years ago? Nobody. They just fix them, or offer you credit for another model if the one you send in can't be fixed and is out of production.

**Q: Anyone know if the bug out pocket clip is compatible with the 940?**
A: It Is

**Q: How do I know that this is not a clone aka a fake?**
A: Fakes/clones/replicas/knockoffs, whatever you want to call them are sold by three major vendors: AliExpress, DHgate and Wish.
The knives are manufactured by a small group of craftsman representing an estimated 10-20 major online customer facing storefronts in Shenzhen, China. These stores are shielded by China's 'give zero f@#$ks' attitude related to copyright law, fair use and international patent laws.
I've seen clones of a Benchmade 940 and the new Benchmade 9400 Auto.
The quality in materials is indistinguishable, even the D2 and S30v steel hardness was true to the originals on the ones I examined. After a side-by-side comparison with my genuine 940 the small discrepancies start crawling out of the woodwork. Examples: The blade not seating low enough in the closed position, pocket clip 2cm shorter than original, laser engravings are slightly askew.
They are getting better all the time and becoming harder to spot, especially now that the clone shops are dialing in their authentic looking packaging.
For a price comparison:
Chinese 9400Bk $30, free shipping.
USA 9400Bk $270, shipping varies.

535's clones start around $20, but come in many limited editions with anodized titanium parts, jade/G10/carbon fiber and even titanium scales.

**Q: Is this a legal knife to carry in California?**
A: Yes

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The perfect knife to have with you at all times.
*by M***O on May 15, 2026*

Light weight, beautifully crafted and extremely sharp.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Man, this is a good knife
*by F***R on March 26, 2019*

For comparison, I have the Northfork(wood), regular griptilian, 940-2, bug out, and series of other knives including several spydercos including the paramilitary 2 and karahawk. I initially liked the quality of the spydercos and they were among my first higher quality knives that I owned. I was always under the impression that spydercos were top of the line, but then I decided to try the grip full sized. Then I went nuts and got the 940, then the bug out, then the mini grip. These knives hold an edge longer than other knives by far of the same steel. Not only that, the axis lock > any other locking mechanism hands down. The blade shapes imho are more practical and universal. After owning the north fork and mini, I didn't think I needed a bug out but this is a solid knife. Slightly longer than a mini grip and north fork but slightly shorter than a 940. Thinner and much lighter than all the knives I have in my collection. It is a solid knife to add to the rotation so much that all of my spydercos except the pm2 are being phased out. Comparably, the manix is the next best thing within this size but I much prefer the ergos of benchmades, this blade shape, and the quality of heat treat to this metal over all. Honestly, I was concerned from reviews about the scales and the pocket clip. It's true the scales feel cheap but they're solid. I don't believe it'll break at all. I wouldn't use this as a survival or bush knife but edc or slicing, it's perfect and extremely effective. The pocket clip is great, love the size and how much less evasive it looks than a full sized pocket clip. I don't understand what the complaints about the pocket clip is about as I have no issues sliding the clip into my pants easily without needing to fiddle with it, even when I got it brand new and hadn't broken it in yet. My favorites in order 1. 940 2. Grip 3. Bug out, north fork, and mini grip (can't decide) (I love the light Bug out and the clip but the scales feel cheap even though they're pretty sturdy but the other knives are thicker and better suited for piercing and heavier duty, therefore pros and cons depending on what you need it for) 4. Pm2 5. Karahawk I am typically very brand neutral, but I've been won over from spydercos hands down. I just need bm to come out with a knife that rivals the karahawk. 100% recommend the bug out. I have the original blue. I'm looking at a adamas to complete my collection
