The eyes light up when you press the brake pedal, and they add another indicator that you're about to slow down/stop for the driver behind you. The skull is plastic and the wire was long enough for my 2006 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer V6 with the factory tow package. I had the same one 10 or 11 years ago, but it lost an eye light so I ordered this new one as a replacement. The new one is built much heavier than the old one, so it seems the manufacturer may be trying out thicker/heavier designs as the product matures.
