Emil Hermes (not surprisingly) is also the name of company's founder. The first razors constructed by Merkur already presented a safety comb in which was fixed a removable wedge-shaped blade that had to be sharpened regularly. During '900 Merkur patented several blades models and all their safety razors are marked with "Made in Solingen" and "Germany". After Emil Hermes's death in 1957, his family carried forward the business. The razor is quite heavy. **Q: Want to stop using 5 blade shavers is this a good first choice for a safety razor. Than you** A: The Merkur razor is very well made and a solid piece of kit. Personally though I found it pretty aggressive when I first moved from multi blade shaving to DE shaving. I then bought an Edwin Jagger 3D diamond laser razor which came with 5 Feather blades. I found this a better staring razor for the transition. Having said all that it depends on your skin and beard so you may not find the Merkur as aggressive as I did. The Edwin Jagger performs very well for me and a two-pass shave, with and against the grain, gives me a babies bum smooth shave. **Q: Does anyone know why Amazon has this product 'Under Review' is there an issue or fault with it?** A: I've had mine for a few years now and never had a problem with it **Q: I use a fusion but want to give a safety razor a try, but do suffer with sensitive skin, does anyone use this and have sensitive skin and finds it ok?** A: Its not just the razor but also the shaving soap you use. I am slightly sensitive and changed several years ago to safety razors. I use a good quality (badger) brush and traditional soap and as long as you give your whiskers a good soak with water and soap I expect you'll not have any issues. I was advised to allow around four minutes from first wetting to actually start shaving and I have found this to really work. There are no markings on the face of this razor so it is difficult to know if you shave using both sides of the razor or just one side. I used a drop of my wifes nail varnish to identify this so I get to use both sides of the blades. The razor itself is not particularly large - it does feel rather rather small to me but I am also rather large. If you buy this then its worth buying the leather sheath if you do much travelling.
