It came with a V-shaped clip with a small hole on each side. I don't see any mention of this clip, so what is it used for?** A: Use that with a smoker which will have a lid on it. The built-in thermometers on smokers lids are usually not very accurate. Put the clip on the smoker grill before the grill is hot, and insert the probe and wire somewhere in the middle but in a place where it will not touch the meat. Try to keep it a couple inches away from the meat, which is going to be cold and will fool it. Use that probe to monitor the temperature inside the smoker. Use the bottom and side vents of the smoker to adjust the heat up or down. Leave the top vents open. **Q: what is the length of the probe?** A: The probe is 8.5" with a cable length of 40" (3' 4") 2 probes with cables included **Q: The length of the probe is given as 8.5" but iTronics answer says 6.5". I need 6.5" straight, not bent, probe. Is this it?** A: The thin probe itself is 6 1/8 inches long; total length of the piece including the knurled end (from point to the wire) is 8 3/8 inches. **Q: Will the device work if only two out four probes are plugged to the device? I am very happy with this purchase! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Works great, good price *by T***M on January 11, 2020* I bought this to supplement the built in unit on my Traeger smoker. It has dual probes so you can keep track of different types or sizes of meat as they cook. Or you can just leave one probe plugged in. The alarm can be set for time or for temp. There are two large flat magnets on the back of the unit so it latches on very powerfully anywhere I select on the grill. Out of the box it read within one degree of 32 in a glass of ice water and verified with a second instant-read that I use. I actually used this to aid in calibrating the Traeger thermometer which was reading 12(!) degrees high. The probe wires seem to be coated in some sort of metallic wrap so I’m not worried about them resting on the hottest parts of the inside of the grill near the meat. My only complaint is I don’t seem to be able to set the backlight to stay on. It lights up when you press a button but then goes back off. Not a huge problem and likely for battery saving but sometimes near the end of an evening cook it would be nice to just turn it on so I can take a peek out the window to monitor instead of having to go outside 27 times. I’d recommend this unit for grill or oven use. Update years later. These are still good and accurate but I’ve gone through a couple replacements due to moisture. If it even looks like it’s going to sprinkle out, you have to put the unit in a plastic bag or otherwise protect it from rain. These become unusable with any moisture infiltration whatsoever. I also wish they came with a set of shorter probes.
