One there are two pieces of plastic for each leg. Eight pieces per shelf so a total of 32 plastic pieces. There are notches in each one so they fit into one another. There are groves on the legs which you can set how high you want your legs. The plastic pieces are thinner on one side and thicker on the other. The thinner side goes up. Once each leg set to the height you want you to put the shelf on and press it down. Because of the one-star reviews. I stood on my bottom shelf on both sides and I weight over 200 lbs. It held me. I think I could have sat on each shelf and it would have held me. I think you put the shelves upside down where there would be a rail around the shelf but this would be wrong and possibly why it wouldn't work. Each collar on the corner of the shelves is smaller on the top side and larger on the bottom side. So the weight of the shelf is going to force the plastic wedge in place making it more sturdy. All the kitchen around the country have these kinds of shelves on a much larger wider scale. They all use the same kind of plastic inserts. It is not that hard to build. You can do it build it yourself. A second pair of hands would help. I liked the shelving unit I just ordered another one. I just wanted to say this unit does not deserve a one star. The gentle force of that shelf push is what closes them. Just make sure you attach the clips with the “top” and arrow facing up and just above the single grooves of your choice…not one of the double grooves…on the pole then slide them down the pole a little until they snap into that single groove. And be sure to slide the shelf on with the lip facing down. It’s too bad the directions don’t explain this about the clips because our brains think the clips should snap completely together when attached to the poles. **Q: What is the diameter of the posts?** A: I don't know what diameter the other sizes are, but the 30" three tier shelf is only 3/4" diameter. I went off the previous answer when I bought three of these. Boy was I fooled when I received 3/4" poles. Smh! **Q: Is it possible to turn the shelves around so that the edges of the shelves have a lip?** A: The answer is that you should not unless you are not planning to put much weight on them. The HOLES in the Shelves for the Brackets (standards) are Trapezoidal in shape. They are designed to work like Wedges with the Plastic Bracket pieces. The more weight is added to the shelf, the harder the bracket pieces are shoved together so they GRIP the Shelves ONTO the Poles (shelf stndards) keeping them in place. If you turn the shelves UPSIDE down, the Wedge Functionality is defeated. They will not be Nearly as sturdy and will be prone to Slipping down the Poles. Could you get Lucky and have them Not slip? Well Yes, if not much eight at all was on each shelf (30 to 50 Pounds). But assembled correctly, these should hold 350 pounds per shelf with NO Way to slip. Lessons learned from Ancient Egyptians, Romans, and Greeks. I don't have a lot of extra space in my garage, so I had to get creative with storage. This unit is just the right size to fit in front of the side entry door to my garage, and provides much needed space for my small welder, jack stands, c-clamps, and misc. power tools which I put in milk crates on the shelves. The loaded shelf rolls easily when I want to open the door or need to get a bit more space near my bench within my garage. I have the heaver stuff on the bottom to prevent tipping over, and use the caster locks when not moving it for safety.
