## Description

Prestige ~ Prestige

Review: One of the top films of the decade - a twisted tale exploring the pain of 'not being seen' - Here we see a pair of Magicians, like filmmakers, doing what they can to draw attention. A profound story, it explores some very hurt characters feelings - of 'enoughness' and 'being seen'. For me it resonates with the missing father figure who could have approved and blessed these characters but instead the situation breaks down and the pains of the magicians come to centre stage. The real trick is to get your attention but in reality who do we really beg attention from, for most people that is ones parents/partner/love who we wanted attention from but didn't get. The films themes include split attention, split personalities, twos and symmetry, so as the audience our attention is also split, mimicking the brokenness of attention the characters feel and incompleteness. Magic tricks help the audience to 'escape' or take break from reality as do movies but this film hints at the idea that that is not what the audience really wants.
Review: Great movie - Seen on a yt short that it was rated a 10/10 so gave it a chance fair to say it comes close to a 10/10 great plot that keeps you guessing and 2 unexpected twists at the end

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good But No Subtitles
*by J***N on 30 May 2021*

The Prestige is a really good film, let down by Amazon's lack of subtitles. I never give away plot and denouement, however to paraphrase the IMDB: following a tragic accident, two stage magicians battle to create the ultimate illusion and destroy everything they have in order to win. "The Prestige" is the sort of magical meta-cinema movie that director Christopher Nolan does well. And it's suitable for the family, even for tutting aunts and grandparents. Sumptuous locations, costumes, and photography all combine for a real work of art. The writing, direction, and the acting, are all superb. Christopher Bale as usual turns in a memorable performance; we British shouldn't complain about his character or his accent. Michael Caine and Jugh Jackman never disappoint us, and the supporting cast is solid (flawless). Still, if you can't hear the movie then you can't rate it properly; Amazon gets an average score this time. The Prestige entertains and intrigues with its sub-plots, twists and reveals. I recommend you watch it, if you can hear it, and that is my only problem with this film and with Amazon: not enough subtitles. Amazon needs to put more effort into subtitling for the hard of hearing. Those most affected by these failures are the people who can't hear. Movie and TV sound jump between clear speech and diction, to mumbled; from loud to whispers. Unfortunately for some audiences, actors will mumble when they're not on stage in a theatre. And like so many streaming services and retailers, the Amazon audience suffers from a paucity of subtitles which would include more of them. Subtitles would complete the experience and comprehension, and the enjoyment they pay for. Some would say that the world is made for able and healthy people; it's made for those who can see and hear perfectly. It really is not and it shouldn't be.
