Review: Whitby warmer. - Excellent product.
Review: I checked the internet and saw that there were lots of different makes and choosing the best was a tossup between the Zippo and - WHITBY HANDWARMERS 2015 REVIEW During approximately 30 years of Field Archery, Mountain walking and night fishing on cold wind swept beaches. I have had to endure some bitterly cold days and nights. I always carried hand warmers to help keep me warm. The original charcoal warmers are still working but now in a rather rusted and dilapidated condition, time for something new. I checked the internet and saw that there were lots of different makes and choosing the best was a tossup between the Zippo and the Whitby. Whitby sounded like an English town on the Yorkshire coast, which it is, so to give local business a chance, I ordered two using desertcart. Hand Warmers arrived one day earlier than expected, within 24 hours. Packaging was good and adequate for the purpose. I tested the hand warmers, ... easy to light and they burned for longer than specified. I spent the entire day out in freezing conditions Sunday 1st February 2015 and felt the comforting warmth which helped to keep my spirits up. The Whitby's do not use charcoal but burn lighter fluid which is cheap and easy to handle. There are no flames involved the mechanism is called a catalytic burner. I filled the tank with 10cc of fuel and ignited them and they burned for about 10 hours long enough for a days outing in the winter. (Roughly 1cc per hour) Whitby's are not easy to extinguish the best method I found was to drop them into a Kilner jar and close the lid. Kilner jars are designed to withstand high temperatures and will not crack. You could also use a jam pot and screw the lid back on, the warmers will go out when all of the oxygen in the jar is used up. WHITBY HANDWARMERS 2016 REVIEW UPDATE. The Whitbey warmers have been in storage since March 2015 and now its January 2016 thats' 9 months. I was expecting the unused lighter fluid remaining in the warmers may have damaged the catalytic burners. I topped up the warmers with another 10cc of Ronsonol lighter fluid. Zippo or Swan fluid would be equally as good, these are all well known and respected names. Do not use petrol or gas oil that you put into your cars fuel tank it is not of the correct type. The specified lighter fluids are all Naphtha and that is all you should use. I primed the burners and ignited them with a with my gas lighter and waited until the flames died down before replacing the ventilated top. The burners went out after a few minutes. I tried again but this time I used my jet torch lighter which gets up to a much higher temperature than the standard gas lighter. This had the effect of burning off the contamination possibly the residue from the evaporated lighter fluid. The hand warmers remained lit and continued to do so for about four hours giving off good heat. They were then extinguished in the kilner jar. If you don't have a jet torch ..... then ...... pinch the wife's Brulee Blowtorch. Be careful, ... just let the edge of the flame touch the top of the burner, too much heat could vapourise the volatile fluid within the burner and may cause an explosion. The rolling pin effect is also painful when the XYL discovers where the brulee torch has gone. I bought two additional Whitby hand warmers as a present tor the XYL and I also took the precaution of buying four replacement burners even though the original ones are far from needing replaced. Each catalytic burner provides approximately 90 full (12 hour) burns, thats over 1000 hours per burner. Running costs a 130ml tin of lighter fluid costs abpout £3:00. The unit burns somewhere between 1.5 ml to 2.5 ml per hour, I can't give a precise figure on this as the burn time seems to depend on the ambient temperature and oxygen flow round the burner. My friend who is also an Archer and Night fisherman bought the Zipo version which also works very well however the Whitby has the edge as it costs less and works very well.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Will these fit a zippo version**
A: it was a bit looser fit than the zippo one on mine (newer 12hr zippo model) but still worked after pinching it to make it a tighter fit, though it didn't stay hot for the full 12hr and went out even though it definitely burned hotter, BUT however, I found a better work around, which was to just pick out the catalyst material using a toothpick from the Whitby burner and pick out the material from the original zippo burner, then poke in just the material from the Whitby burner into the original zippo burner using a toothpick, job done and it burns hotter and the Whitby burners have much more material, worked fine and lasted the full 12hrs.

**Q: Do these fit the zippo hand warmers thanks in advance**

A: Yes, the burner and clip come together, when you order the replacement.
