Reading levels, past experience (knowledge), etc. I loved it and I'm 39. I bought it for my middle school art students. But it can go younger if it's an intelligent youngin' (reading wise and willing to experiment). It is VERY basic circuits. Fun to play with... And once you understand the concept - whether working by yourself or working with someone else - it's pretty easy... And then comes the creativity aspect of it :-) Not for a 5 year old, though... I'd go with a person who can control their fine motor skills enough to be able to stick the circuits together... Otherwise it'll turn out to be the "adult" doing it for the child... Hope this helps... **Q: Can you create an off and on switch?** A: The book included inside this kit teaches you how to build a variety of paper electronic switches that you can use with your lights. For example, all of the press-to-light switches can also function as an on/off switch by slipping a paperclip over the switch. **Q: How many lessons are included, and for how long would each lesson roughly take?** A: There are five lessons and they don't take even 30 minutes. You don't need to do all of them in order to start creating. **Q: What type of copper tape?** A: Find one that has conductivity even on the sticky side. The copper tape is great to work with, so much more kid-friendly than wires. Additional leds (in different colors) can be purchased on Amazon for cheap. The book that came along with the kit was extremely helpful while also being creative. I was planning on using in my classroom after we master Circuit Jr., but I need to figure out how to reuse the stickers before we play around with them. I used them for a sign to advertise an event and people loved them! I have had no trouble with any parts sent and they are easy to manipulate and explore with. Every item was clearly marked and obvious. Again, I just wish I knew how to reuse them over and over again. Highly recommended for crafty people who want to add something different to their projects. Making light up cards and pop up books, "wiring" a shoebox dollhouse, making a lantern that starts out flat but folds into a cube (thereby closing the circuit and turning on the light) - we have had fun.
