The seed starter is a plastic base with peat cubes that are ready to go, nothing to add except a bit of water. They arrive pre-moistened and ready to use. They are for use in a hydroponic system but I am using this system as a starter base for flowers to grow outside. I am trying both seeds and cuttings of plants in two sections and both are growing with a strong root system. It is very easy to set up and get your seeds started right.The tray itself has individual compartments and is made of a good quality light weight plastic that should last for several seedings by replacing the pods. Pods are available from other manufacturers that are reasonable. I am running the light around the clock to get them started but will wean the seedlings off into a 12 hour cycle when I get closer to transplanting outside. I live in a zone 9-10 and my growing season actually is perfect for setting out seedling in January and most perennials need to be in the ground by February to get a good start for the year. I can't wait to get seedlings in the ground and it only took about 2 weeks to get decent growth. They are pre-moistened. So easy to use and tidy, the little soil balls that you put the seeds into have some magical property that keeps them whole and they're very easy to transplant. I know these are meant for hydroponics but they work great as seed starters.
