The 427 Tri-Power of pocket folding knives...

*by J***Z on Reviewed in the United States on July 3, 2011*

...I could go on a while about the CSAR-T Pro for a while, but really, the first reviewer does a good job explaining things about this tank-of-a-folder. If you want an over-built super-duty-427 Tri-power of a knife which is made for extreme use - this is it. The price is amazing at under $100 - I think you get twice the knife (at least) for the money. Field and Stream gave it it's "best of the best" award, and I can see (AND FEEL) why. The blade is VERY thick (thicker than the Spyderco Mili.); it came hair popping sharp; has an actually belly, which is not normal in tanto style blades; has great jimping on top; did I say it was larger than it measures?? When you open this thing, I swear if you listen closely you can hear it rumble!! This knife has awesomely textured G-10 scales which give you gripping power and good comfort (considering it's size and weight). There's a lot of steel in this thing, so it's heavy, but I don't care. The upsides and collectibility are amazing. I may buy another one! It's also a good comparison to other much more expensive tank-like folders out there (ZT etc.). I think this knife would hold up well in combat, survival, and other extreme situations. It would do awesome as a blunt force object (if closed), and a small hand-axe for chopping tinder and kindling. ATS34 is a upper quality steel which had it's best days in the 90's - it's the Japanese version of CM154 (USA). This steel has good toughness, good corrosion resistence and good edge holding ability - so, it's good across the board. The CSAR-T is a handsome knife, both open and closed, but is barely EDC capable (I carried it around for a few days and really it wasn't too bad; not a knife you want to display to the public and not a gentleman's/business man's knife either) - the handle is about 5/8's+ wide and it's about 9 oz. The included/free Cordura sheath is awesome and perfectly matched to the knife - it's worth $15 or so by itself. This is a raw hunting/combat/self-defense/enthusiast/collector's folder. Extreme/Purist hikers and campers who scoff at weight may want to seek ligher versions of this folder ("Avid").Ok - a few hits... As a few have said the blade doesn't center on mine when closed and it actually rubs a bit on the liners when in the act of closing it (I have the same issue on a Vantage Avid folder); this doesn't bother me as much, because this blade is do thick, it barely fits between the liners anyway. Getting it lined up may not be so easy (and the liner lock is the reason for this). The liner-lock is sprung so tight, that it presses against the blade and it get's out of center; the liner-lock is very, very tight on this knife (almost too much), but for such a heavy duty knife, I don't mind it all that much - it keeps it locked up really vault solid. The blade action is smooth and it deploys quickly - so, no issues there. Sure, this knife could be lightened a little bit, and there are a few things that could be improved. I love it the way it is. Is it better than the Spyderco Mili??Maybe for some applications, and not for others - definitely not weight or steel (in my opinion). It's hands-down a sturdier knife, and a prettier one too. They both have a very high place in my collection for big ballsy folders. You won't be disappointed with this purchase. Looks like I went on about it anyway... Fistful

A legit hard core working knife.

*by J***R on Reviewed in the United States on August 19, 2016*

I've now owned this knife for over a year. This is an edited version of the review I wrote when I had only a week or two experience with it.Buck and Tops collaborated on this knife and the results are great. The design, build quality, and components all seem like what you would find on knives that cost 2 times as much.I highly recommend this knife if you are looking for a brutishly tough do-anything tool. I've put this knife through hell and it's never faultered. In addition to the heavy duty construction and materials, the tanto style blade makes it extremely durable as well as usefull. It's heavy and rather bulky so I'd recommend it as a working tool but I can't see anyone liking it as "gentleman's knife". Basically, this is a workman's and/or outdoorsman' knife, and a great one at that.Originally I rated this as a 4 instead of a 5 based on the heavy weight and bulk of the knife. Now that I see the heft as a purposeful design benefit I bumped it up.This knife has a pretty tight and stiff clip. It can be placed on either side of the handle scales so it works for both right and left handed people. It also comes with a sturdy carrying pouch that fits to a belt. If that becomes your prefered method of carry you can remove the clip altogether.Another nice attribute is how easy it is to deploy and retract the blade with one hand. The liner lock keeps the blade security in place with absolutely no blade play. The lock is easily disengaged so two handed operation is not required.Sorry about the long-winded review. I just wanted to spread the news that this is really a great knife. If you are curious about the cutout holes in the blade they are used to bend wire.

    Beefy EDC knife

*by T***S on Reviewed in the United States on June 23, 2015*

I purchased this knife with the intention of using it as a work knife/EDC. My initial impressions were "This thing is HUGE!" When I pulled it out of the box, the knife had a nice heft to it. I was especially impressed since it is a folder, and I am used to much lighter folding knives. To some, this knife might be too heavy, but for someone who doesn't mind a little weight in the pocket it is perfect.Initially the knife was not as sharp I would expect, especially for one so expensive. The knife is a tanto style, convex grind, so it is pretty easy to sharpen. Still, I expected a sharper edge for the quality. The opening mechanism felt incredibly solid, and when locked in place there is absolutely no play. The clip is incredibly tight, almost too much, but it keeps the knife snug in my pocket. I did have to adjust one of the screws in the clip, another small complaint, but that took an eye glass screwdriver and a torx bit. I love the 'rocky mountain tread' handle design (a TOPS feature), it allows the knife to seat firmly in my hand. I have large sized hands and I am still able to get four fingers to comfortably fit around the hand. The finger groove is a nice feature that adds to comfort and functionality. At the hilt of the knife is a small hole that can hold a hex driver and interchangeable bits. This is not a feature I will ever use, but I guess for the right person it could perform an additional function. Along with the knife came a sheath that can be attached to packs or belts with MOLLE webbing. I do not use the sheath as I prefer the knife to sit in my pocket. For the most part I have used the knife for every day tasks (cutting ropes, some fencing applications, etc.) and it has held up extremely well. The steel allows the knife to stay sharp and I have simply stropped it a few times to retain a keen edge. As a test, I batoned a few small logs with the knife, and it performed fine. I also created a few feather sticks, a task which it did not perform well with, but that is simply a testament of the grind and not the knife as a whole. This knife could perform well in a pinch as a survival knife, but it is not intended to be a primary survival/bushcraft knife.I would highly recommend this knife for someone looking for a beefy EDC knife that can take a huge beating and still remain functional. The weight, sharpening ability, and quality of the build are its upsides. I have a few Buck knives and this is by far my favorite. Great knife!
