Chrome vanadium or molyedium (chrome-moly) or any of the various alloys of steel are still steel... NOT STAINLESS which in and of itself also has various alloys depending on the properties for the steel that are being achieved.. ( 400, 430, 17-4 , 700 are various grades of stainless steel.. 17-4 is some pretty tough stuff but a B_____ to machine or cast.. SHORT ANSWER- SOCKETS ARE NOT, REPEAT NOT STAINLESS STEEL. However, with a high grade of 'regular' steel. these sockets are HARD CHROME PLATED which most corrosion tests and wear or abrasion tests will outperform stainless steel. Even the US Navy designates 'Stainless' as 'Corrosion Resistant' steel.. it can rust under hard conditions. Hard Chrome if done properly.. not flash applied just to say it's hard chrome... will hold up under ANY NORMAL use..
