The leather itself feels good—supple but not overly soft—and it has enough structure to be usable without feeling flimsy. Because there’s no backing, it does require a lighter, more controlled touch to avoid rounding the edge, but that’s just part of the nature of this style. I’m using it without any compound, and it still performs well. It cleans up the edge, improves bite, and helps maintain a smooth cutting feel with just a few light passes. It’s not aggressive, but that’s not the point—it’s more about maintaining than rebuilding an edge. To get a firm surface, I lay the strop on top of my sharpening stone, which sits on its plastic box. That setup gives me a stable, non-slip base and makes the strop much easier to use consistently. I’ve been using it on DC53, 14C28N, and the steel Victorinox uses in their Swiss Army knives, and it performs well across all of them. **Q: How much polishing compound is in the block provided? The pictures provided show a larger block being used to cover the leather.**
A: Not sure how many ounces - but it does cover the surface very well and there is a lot left over for future applications.  I think it used up about 25% - but the initial application will take the most to cover the surface then the touch ups as needed won't use up much.  The leather strop is first rate and i have been able to polish my hand plane blades to a nice sharp shine.

**Q: What animal is this strop made of? Cow hide?**

**Q: Can other compounds such as CBN or spray diamond be used?**
A: This is a piece of leather!  Can you put spray compound on leather!  If so yes and I have rubbed several different components on mine it works fine!

**Q: Anyone used for tools; chisels and plane irons?  Any good or just for knives?**
A: I only use this for chisels and plane irons. I used contact cement and glued it to a piece of 3/4 MDF.  Instead of the included compound I use trend mirror paste on the smooth side provides a much better edge.  I use the lapping films and float glass method for sharpening so a final strop is all I need.  If I used stones I would buy 2 and have one for rough side and one for smooth.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Pros & Cons of this piece of stropping leather

The pros & cons of this leather. First the pros…. I loved the piece of leather from Beaver Craft the suede side was very nice and couldn’t have worked better for final stage of stropping and polishing my knives. You can tell the leather was meticulously chosen and prepared. After sharpening my knives I hit the smooth side to knock the burr off then I switch to the side side and I use a .5 diamond emulsion to finish to a mirror finish everytime if that’s my goal. I have been around leather all my life growing up as a shoe maker and repairer. Made many trips to Italy to purchase our leather for the shop. Italy produces through their famous tanning processes some of the finest quality leather in the world. Although this leather piece would be graded as average at best in the industry and marketplace it is excellent for what I use it for…stropping. There were a number of flaws in the hide that caused it to look marred but the look did not affect its usefulness. The cons…. Way too small a piece and way overpriced for what you get. Keep in mind I’m grew up with my uncle buying rolls of leather and complete hides. Nevertheless the price is very high. If they sold either a piece twice the size or two pieces of the same price that would be a little more reasonable. We used to throw away left overs by the garbage can full that would easily match the size of this. In all fairness they are marketing to a consumer who doesn’t have access to leather distributors and know in most cases this is all one may need. And so they priced it accordingly. I get it! My final conclusion is if you just need a small strop to hone & finish your EDC’s or kitchen knives you can’t go wrong it’s an excellent piece of leather just a bit high in price.
