For example if you look up tension maps for bass strings or look up what tensions are you will notice strings like D'addario chromes are closer to 50 lbs of tension per string. for example E string 40.29 lbs a is 47.52 g is 58.63 and g is 53.31 these strings feel real tight just to clarify those are the D'addario chromes. But for the low tension flats these tensions are E 34.2 A 30.5 d 34. G 36.2 as you can see a huge difference from chromes. Places like GHS strings has whole tension maps for their strings per fret. There is a sort of science depending on your instrument and tensions you may want compared to styles or sounds your trying to produce. Low tensions generally will allow you to play and bend strings easier while some higher tensions will have better transient or have more sustain. This is a rabbit hole that starts to expand and you can research for hours.
