Top Quality Pub Rock, Boss Tunes and A Bargain Price - Enjoyment Ensues.

I like these 'Original Album Series' releases; an inexpensive way to acquire some fine music for modest outlay, even if the packaging is on the skimpy side. Dave Edmunds also threatened to be a Big Act, but never quite got there. Even his 1970 number one hit, 'I Hear You Knocking', was never really followed up, and although he sporadically had some excellent chart hits - such as 'Girls Talk' and 'Queen of Hearts', he never quite broke through to the Toppermost of the Poppermost. This five album set spans his first band of note, Love Sculpture, they of that sizzling guitar workout, 'Sabre Dance', from the late sixties, through to 1981's 'Twangin', which includes his bona fide hits 'Singin' The Blues' and 'The Race Is On' (where he is backed with some aplomb by The Stray Cats, whom he had produced). There is some frequently staggeringly good music on here - 'Get It', 'Tracks On Wax 4' and 'Repeat When Necessary' have him working closely with Nick Lowe, and they have that reassuring Rockpile Pub Rock chug throughout, but that shouldn't undermine the quality of the songs - lovely things like 'Here Comes The Weekend', 'A1 On The Jukebox', and 'Queen of Hearts', which are top-notch, amongst some lesser things, admittedly. True, the packaging is sleeve note free and reduced to a size where you will require a magnifying glass or the Hubble telescope to read the credits, but hell, you can't play a sleeve, but you can play the CDs, and that's where these minor gems take off and live. He may never have been trendy, but Edmunds was never duff. At this price, you'd be a fool to pass up on it.

    Great albums, great value.

Worth getting for the ‘Get It’ album alone but there’s a wealth of other gems to savour too. Setting aside the Love Sculpture offering (interesting to diehard fans like me, but probably not essential), the other 3 CDs boast a familiar mix of authentic rockabilly and lush ballads, and include a few hit singles for good measure. While his influences are hard to miss (Everly Brothers, Chuck Berry, Elvis, Beach Boys etc) the sound is pure Dave Edmunds; great vocals, twanging guitars and faultless harmonies. Sound quality is guaranteed by the fact that they are all produced by the man itself. This pack is great value from one of the UK’s finest rock musicians; never puts a foot wrong, never sells us short. Terrific stuff.

Dave Edmunds including one Love Sculpture album

*by D***Y on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 February 2019*

I enjoy listening to Dave Edmunds and the instrumental he did with Love Sculpture (from the Forms And Feelings album which is included here) of Sabre Dance was outstanding. I am puzzled why the four albums here were chosen along with the Forms and Feelings album though. I already owned Forms and Feelings bought a few years ago (2nd hand) which contained all 8 tracks here and several bonus tracks which are missing from this cd. Also he released several albums (which I used to own on vinyl but sadly lost over time) which were demanding inclusion on this set. Will there be a volume 2 to include his first 2 solo albums (Rockpile and Subtle as a Flying Mallet) or is that too much to hope for? Could we please also see some bonus tracks included if there will be an Original Album Series Volume 2?
