The original was panned critically. Team Ninja listened to the complaints and pretty much fixed most of the problems with the original. There are multiple weapons now, the combat system has been completely overhauled - this version actually has a complex battle system like NG1 & 2 did. Its also significantly more difficult and requires skill to learn and master. You could pretty much finish NG3 just button mashing. Not here.
