I am a fan of almost every release in the Ethiopiques series, but this one is the best. Absolutely singular, it stands out above the rest even though many (all?) of the pieces have been featured by other artists over various releases in the series.Werqu's exquisite fingering carries the tunes that I have come to know and love in a very different way. The comparative sparsity of the music brings out a richness not heard elsewhere which, intertwined inseparably as it is with Werqu's vocals, creates a lush and hypnotic stream of sound.
