Review: It's the movie you expect - the first story is the jewel - It's inaccurate to criticize everyone watching this and praising this as a pretentious twit. Is it the best scifi eva? No. Should you watch a lot of other scifis before this? Yes, there are definitely more formative science fiction films and anime films out there. If you are new, this is not the movie to start with. But a lot of you have already exhausted a good chunk of those movies - and are looking for something innovative, something well drawn. It is exactly that movie. This is a collection of short tales from the Akira director, with a lot of attention to detail. The first story is a dream-like visual experience - a fantasia - right out of Vampire D Bloodlust meets Cowboy Bebop - music and all. (Add in Bioshock) Is it really well plotted? No. Like Bloodlust, story comes second to the art. And not all art is inspired (sometimes it sticks with plain baroque). But some of the sequences are mesmerizing. They're a tunnel into high concept horror and space design - a direct portal to dreams. The second story seems like more of a story - initially, but if you evaluated it that way, it would break down faster than the first. The key joy to it - is not necessarily the animation or even the premise - but the pace, chaos, and Michael Bay emphasis on explosions. Is it dumb? Yes. Is the main character the dumbest man who ever lived? Yes. Does anybody's actions make sense? No. But it is exhilarating, and there is a joy in taking what is otherwise a serious (horrifying) plot - like a big bomb explosion movie. It is worth ending your viewing there. The third story is labor intensive. It's not tangible enough to carry the weight of the things it wants to convey, and heavily reliant on you already knowing the meaning. Mostly you'll just be watching it for the art. The art reflects the subject - looks like propaganda posters with a dash of the beautiful machinery the director is so adept at. But it is wearisome and slow to watch. If you are well-read or well-watched, you'll know the "point" within the first minute. And you'll feel a lot like you're being bludgeoned for the other 20. Nothing new - we've had many variations of the art and premise. Maybe if you hallucinate hard? (Mary Poppins rooftops!) I think the key here is to watch the first two. If you don't like the second one, leave off. But the first is a jewel. If you don't understand why it's a jewel, maybe not your groove. Or maybe try later?
Review: Fun being tagged is misleading. - The three stories do not connect. For the time given on each, you get quality story telling with beautiful visuals and sound/music to accompany it and top notch art direction. The endings to each may not be predictable to most, but they are good and worth watching to the end for. Even the English dub is good! It's not perfect, nothing is, but it is worth your time and deserves love.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Good Anime, No Dubs though...
*by '***Y on March 28, 2012*

I did not know when I purchased this that there were no dubs included. As an Anime viewer, I am not a fan of subtitles. I know for hardcore extremists dubs are sacrilege. But I hate reading when I am watching a movie. That being said I still enjoyed this 3 movie series. Each one is radically different from the next. I especially enjoyed the one about the city that is constantly launching bombs at another city. Forgive me the names are all excluding me at this time... There was a message in the bombing movie. The message was that people can be sweapt up by their governments. That they can be performing functions and not really know why. It showed that children are sometimes the only ones with patriotism, that adults all lose this empty feeling. That if no one asks questions and just plays their role, governments will continue to use them. The other two movies were good. One is about a guy who after an accident becomes a walking toxic nightmare. The other is a disaster in space drama. All three were pretty good and as long as you don't mind subtitles, I would with reservation say you would like "Memories." -Hope this helps.
