My house was wired already so I was able to install one phone upstairs and one on the main floor. The device gives a dial tone and, just as described, when picking up one of the phones, the other rings. The sound quality is good and it is very easy to set up - basically just plug and play. My daughter loves it! She just calls downstairs, demands yogurt, then hangs up!
