Review (Cheeky/Warner Bros.) Best known for the classic "Clubbed to Death," two versions of which feature here, London-based Australian Rob Dougan’s debut LP mines a similar groove without ever re-hitting such anthemic heights. Still, while the lack of further masterpieces is a predictable disappointment, Furious Angels remains a diverting listen, showcasing Dougan’s unique take on what we often wrongly call dance music. More in the mode of compatriot Baz Luhrmann than close associates Faithless, Dougan’s LP pitches itself firmly toward the movie theater rather than the dance floor. Hence expensive-sounding strings abound on most of the 14 hugely intense, densely produced cuts here, Hitchcock-style. Surprisingly, the majority also feature Dougan’s own, very distinctive, vocals — a sort of pained, Bob Dylan-like, bluesy rasp. Not the most pleasant noise in the world, it‘s either supreme confidence or slight egomania that lets it dominate so heavily. The also-available instrumental version is thus a less interesting, but much easier listen. Choose your weapon. I had discovered Rob Dougan on my Pandora station, and unfortunately could not find the instrumental track of the song "Nothing At All" on iTunes. I buy everything on iTunes, and OffLiberty the rest where possible. But this music spoke to me on a profound level, and I was ready to drop money on dozens of tracks I hadn't initially wanted just for that one song.Boy, did this become a great find. The instrumental tracks are all excellent and complex, but the ones including the vocals are also wonderful. I often find myself listening to this album(s?) when I'm in the right mood. It's dark and powerful, and I love it. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Fantastic album *by S***E on Reviewed in the United States on August 23, 2019* LOVE this album!! Came across him first on Pandora, but the more I listened the more I fell in love with his raspy voice. Love the mix of instrumental, electronic, dance, and that salty, sorrowful, angry yet wonderfully manly voice. It's a wonderful mix and compliment to the music. Also lots of great instrumental tracks. Totally recommend for euro, dance, techno, soul, 80s, 90s, synth pop, and lovers of music like Depeche Mode or Glitch Mob. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Brilliant Debut Album *by E***T on Reviewed in the United States on March 23, 2009* Rob Dougan's Furious Angels is a remarkable album. First, if you are going to get it, make sure to minimally aim to buy the double CD (which includes a second instrumental-only CD). If you can, try to spring the extra few dollars for the enhanced double CD, which includes a gorgeous, artsy accompanying booklet with lyrics and photos. BTW, the second CD also includes the remarkable videos of Clubbed to Death and Furious Angels.Dougan's music is a unique blend of classical, electronic, and pop. The instrumental CD gives a much better feel for the actual quality of the music and I find myself listening to the instrumental CD more than the first CD. Dougan has an interesting, somewhat gravelly voice. It works well on Furious Angels, but can get a little irritating on other tracks.I have to admit that I there is a touch of the teen-angst spirit in these tracks which made me laugh, or at least roll my eyes a bit. Furious Angels begins with the lines, "Like a sentence of death/I've got no options left", plus you have songs with the following titles: Left me for Dead, Clubbed to Death, Speed me Towards Death, etc. OK, I admit it. With the high drama of the music and song titles like that, it could be considered a tad pretentious.But for all the quibbling, this is my favorite current listening album. Furious Angels and Clubbed to Death are the strongest tracks. If you liked them, then get this album.
