Firstly, it's a MULTI-FACTOR device, it's not supposed to replace passwords (yet), hence the term MULTI-FACTOR, there are MULTIPLE FACTORS to your login procedure, the first one being your username and password, the second being this key. Secondly, it doesn't type out your password on screen, it types a cryptographically-calculated string which changes each time and is specific to the hardware key itself. The interaction of touching the device is in place to work with your chosen software when it prompts for a U2F device, where you need to press the key to activate it. This is to stop automated log ins when the key is connected, it requires a human to physically activate it. Pressing the key at any other time will output a meaningless code onto your computer, which means nothing to unconfigured software, so this is not a security risk. Thirdly, not all services support hardware keys yet. In fact with Edge you can setup password-less logon to outlook.com. with chrome and Firefox you can just use it as a second factor after the username and password. **Q: Does this have any kind of backup in case you lose it like some software based 2FA does? Or is it game over if it goes wandering?** A: You use this device as a 2 factor authorization which works with 3rd party software which you purchase separately .It has no software itself. It simply contains a chip which generates a Code which your software recognizes and as it needs to be Physically pressed by a human being it is not possible for hackers to program software to activate it. If you lose it you simply deactivate your device in you software of choice. For example you could use it with a password manager software which you purchase separately. To login into a software you use a password , that is the 1st factor of Authorization, then you insert your Key and press the button , that is the second factor.So if someone gets hold of your password they still can't login in without your stick. It's almost Bullet proof if you ask me. If you lose your Yubikey and wished to deactivate the Yubikey you would do so via a mobile phone which you used to setup your software in the first place. For example you would receive an SMS or Email depending on the Software producer. **Q: Are these keys available to buy in England, they all seem to come from the US or EU with very long delivery times in many cases and no warranty.** A: I bought my first two keys from Yubico UK through Amazon last year but don’t know why they don’t appear here anymore. I bought my third key on Amazon which I think was through Amazon EU. It didn’t take that long to arrive, maybe a week or less. Just download the yubiko authenticator app, to use. If not sure there are so many youtube videos that run through the entire process of setting up and using the key. Warning though this key is meant to stay in the usb A port on your PC, it is a very tight fit. If you want a more mobile key get the yubikey 5, it has more functions ( compatible) than the old security key.
