Review: So How Does Skyrim Run Now? - This review is designed to provide information on how Skyrim runs now. I love Skyrim, but at this point I think it will be more valuable to talk about how the PS3 version worked for me, since I can't really say what hasn't already been said about the quality of the world, environment, leveling, and so on. I don't know if anyone is still trying to figure what (if anything) made Skyrim run horribly for some players on some PS3s, but just in case, here are some tidbits: -Original (fat) PS3 -750gb SATA HDD -Autosave turned off (Early on when people were talking about all of the problems, some speculated about autosave being a problem. I have no idea if it really matters, but I decided not to risk it) -I tried to keep my quest list short (Again I'm not sure if this really matters. But as a precaution, I would eliminate short, random, radiant, and non-guild quests--or quests that didn't lead into another quest--before playing others) -Started playing around 2/12/2012 (I'm not sure which patch was just released, but I think it was 1.4) -Total playtime: 113 hours (and on going. I only finished the Thieves Guild, believe it or not) -Save file size: 9.64 mb So with all of that out of the way, how does Skyrim run now, and more broadly, how did Skyrim run for me? The game played well. It didn't play horribly. It didn't play perfectly. Technical issues do exist, but they are usually best described as infrequent or insignificant. I have provided some detailed descriptions below, but if you don't want to read all three sections, I'll summarize my thoughts here. All big Bethesda RPGs of this generation have problems. With Oblivion it was load times or how some things slowed down. With Fallout 3, the game eventually becomes filled with more and more weird bugs popping up. With Skyrim, the game runs a lot better than Oblivion ever did, especially when you consider how Oblivion had to load constantly while you were roaming the world while Skyrim doesn't, yet it is superior in every technical aspect. It also appears more stable, long term, than Fallout 3. Even though the PS3 version of Skyrim is infamous for poor performance issues, the game runs considerably better than Oblivion and Fallout 3, even though some issues do happen every once in a while. DID MY GAME FREEZE? Sometimes. I don't have an exact number, but it's safe to say it didn't freeze every day. Let's just say less than ten times. (10 out of 113 hours isn't bad, right?) The times it did freeze seemed random to me. I remember one time it froze when I was performing a shout, but I can't (and frankly don't want to) say my game froze because I did X. So, through my experience, the game doesn't seem to freeze because I'm in a huge area, or fighting, or opening doors. It is infrequent and random. I'm not sure if this is an issue with other players, but I should go ahead and mention I never had a corrupted save file or any issues with my actual system after I started playing the game. DID MY GAME LAG? No. At least not like how other people are reporting it. Personally, I thought Oblivion had more issues, especially during scenes with a lot of people on screen and roaming the world while having to load every 20 or so seconds. In Skyrim, the frame rate will drop every now and then, but it doesn't last long. Most of the time it seems to happen when I run through a town with a lot of buildings, people, and other things like running water *looks at Whiterun*. Other people have experienced significant lag, that makes the game unplayable or at the very least no longer fun to play. It never reached that level for me, and the lag and frame rate issues are hardly present in smaller areas. DID MY GAME HAVE A LOT OF GLITCHES? I had some, but fortunately they weren't that bad. I saw one guy, at one point, with an invisible head. One unimportant side quest, out of the 150-200, couldn't be completed because the quest giver couldn't take my items. And yeah, my body flew spectacularly high in the air when I was killed by a giant. (This event seems like it's part of Skyrim's orientation) That isn't the extent of my glitches, but those were the bigger ones, and those three examples are non-existent when you look at my entire experience with Skyrim. In terms of bigger issues--like, but certainly not limited to, flying horses, dragons flying backwards, not being not being able to finish a quest that actually matters--I didn't have any of those. The three examples I gave happened around 5, 20, and 90 hours into the game. From my experience, it doesn't seem like the game has more or less glitches the longer you play it. Just like with the game crashing, it simply does or does not. With Oblivion, I had some glitches. With Fallout 3, I had more glitches, especially after playing through two DLC expansions and having a file that was over 50 hours. While those Bethesda RPGs got worse as time progressed, my Skyrim file, which is longer than my longest files in Oblivion and Fallout 3, seems to be just as stable as it was when it started.
Review: So Far So Good - ***Update 13 January 2012*** I've hit the 60 hour mark with a save of 9mb. Besides some minor stutter after discovering Riften for the first time, I still have not experienced any unplayability r brokeness. After leaving the city and coming back an hour later or so later the stutter was gone. My previous statement of casual gaming has gone out the window. I'll find my self playing for 8-9 hours straight (12 hours one day) and not even blink an eye. The game is still running buttery smoothe for me, even after these marathon sessions. I guess I'm just one of the lucky few. I did experience a broken quest though, but one out of hundreds is no big deal. The game is huge and I don't expect it to be perfect. As for GOTY, it definately has my vote! ***3 January 2012*** I am now about 40 hours into the game and have a save file of 7mb. I'll also throw out there that I have a fatty 80G PS3 that is about 4 years old. Still no game killing stutter, I have had a couple of complete freezes though where I've had to hard shut down the PS3. After the hard shut down the system then has to restore all my files. This hasn't corrupted anything or broken any of my other saved files so I'm not going to ding a star on that. The game itself continues to be fun and addicting and I will continue to update as I get further into it. ***Original Review*** I have yet to experience any of the game crippling lag that many people say happens after their game reaches 8mb. I've been playing for about 25 hours with a save of 5mb. I also only play in 3-4 hour blocks, I'm more of a casual gamer, I'm not sure if this has anything to do with the lack of freezing or not. I've had some minor stutter but that's normal for most games I play. As of right now this game gets 5 stars from me, but if I start to get the slide show syndrome, I won't hesitate to drop the rating accordingly. As for the game itself, it's just amazing. The music really sucks you in to the world of Skyrim. It's so easy to get immersed that sometimes I'll find myself just riding around the tundra on my horse taking in the views. No game has every captured my attention the way Skyrim has. I thought I would hate the first person view, but I actually think this is one of the strongest points of the game. The leveling is also a vast improvement. If you don't want to level up a skill, then just ignore it, it's that simple! The amount of quests seems almost overwhelming at times, but makes it so that you always have something to do. I want to say I have something like 50 different quests open right now and am sometimes torn between what to do next. This doesn't take away from the game at all, in fact it adds to it. And of course the dragons! I've only killed 4 and have been lucky each time as I have yet to face one alone. The dragon is usually distracted fighting a giant or an archer while i just come up along side him and start hitting his leg. Bam! Easy dragon soul. There was also the tough choice of werewolf, or vampire... Hmm, well I hate Edward so I guess werewolf it is! I tried to play Oblivion when I first bought my PS3 a few years ago and was utterly disappointed. I only played about 6 hours before I traded it in for something else. So I was a little hesitant at first about Skyrim. But after receiving it as a gift I decided to give it a shot, and I was not disappointed. Best RPG I've played, and I look forward to plenty more hours of fun.
