We are both faithful Gorey "fangirls" [as she calls us] and have converted my grand-daughter, too. When my daughter told me how much she loved all the Gorey characters in the book and asked if I had gotten myself one too, it prompted me to quickly order another copy for me!It brought back a memory from many years ago when my sister and I went on an excursion to New York City. After we went through a few things that she wanted to see or do, she asked me what I would like to do. I perked up and said I wanted to go to the Gotham bookstore because I wanted to personally visit one of Edward Gorey's haunts. I can't remember the exact date of the trip, but I do know that it was before 9-11 of 2001. This was back in the day of no smart phones or easy access to the internet, So we asked around in our hotel and even on the street for directions. Almost everyone we talked to seemed to know of Edward Gorey and his favorite bookstore on West 47th [I think]. But we were advised to use the location’s proper title of "The Gotham Book Mart" – who knew? Then we did!We found a cab to take us there. The driver said many people ask about the shop so he knew exactly where to go. Well, believe it or not, I was so taken up by the experience that I can only remember gazing wistfully up at the shop's sign and then opening the door and going in. My sister thought I was loonier than ever but I was in a veritably hazy enthrallment.I recall that the store wasn't crowded -- just a few others were there. And I can't really remember the person that greeted and spoke to us, but when I mentioned my affection for Gorey's works, he or she said something like: "Oh, you should have been here about an hour ago --- he stopped by as he often does:.That close, I was that close! But the clerk said that they did have some autographed copies of a few of his short little books that he often drops off. Needless to say, I jumped at the chance! Only 3 autographed copies remained, but I asked if I could have all 3. My sister butted in to say that I should ask for the price first. The clerk heard her and offered the asking price. I cannot remember exactly what it was --- but it was within my budget, so I purchased: "The Glorious Nosebleed", "The Loathsome Couple" and "The Blue Aspic" --- all signed by Gorey. I can't remember how long we stayed but since my sister was getting antsy I know we left sooner than I wanted to. How I wish I would have had a cellphone camera to capture the moment, but I didn't. I only have splintered fragments of the best part of our NYC escapade.P.S. I actually gave my precious copy of “The Loathsome Couple” as a wedding present for some friends. Twenty-five years later they divorced. My only thought was “how could I tactfully ask for my Gorey back?” Then again, maybe my gift predestined them for an unhappy marital conclusion --- which is OK because I liked her well enough, but him?
