Q: Do these work well to knock down echo's and quiet a room?

Yes, absolutely. They absorb sound, limiting the reflections which cause echo. Placement of the panels is very important. I recommend doing your home work on controlling room sound for your particular project.

Q: How did you find the optimal place on the wall(s) for these panels? How many panels and how big of a room did you use them in?

The panels can be used in any size room. Larger rooms will typically require a greater number of panels of course. For absorbing sound, as long as the panels are placed where the sound you are trying to absorb will hit them (all surfaces in most rooms) they will help a lot. More precise placement is a topic to big for this space. It has to do with putting panels where you want to stop reflections from reaching the listener's ears. If you google "ATS Acoustics Room Analysis" you can find a free online tool to help you decide number of panels for your room.

Q: We live in an apartment with a baby; will this work to reduce the sound my neighbors hear if she's crying?

We bought this item for the same reason - to keep our older children from hearing the baby's crying. I think it helped a bit but I can't say it made a huge difference. However, we only bought one panel and our house is very old and the walls are not well insulated.

Q: Is this product finished on both sides so it could be hung from the ceiling?

No it's not. The fabric is wrapped around the edges and stapled to the back. You wouldn't want to display the back side. It's intended to be surface mounted.
