Polish off the wire edge
Buy a simple strop, add paste, polish off that fragile wire edge; if you got a good start, you'll have a crazy sharp, much more durable knife blade. I much prefer this combination of pastes to any other stropping compound I have tried, and I've tried a lot, from rouge to cerium oxide, red, black, green, white, and pink ;-) even newsprint ink. These are fast, consistent, and durable. If you use these as directed, you can't go wrong. Just be sure to thoroughly clean your blade between grades, otherwise you might as well stop after the 1.0 micron grade as it is very easy to contaminate the 0.5. Once you do that, you'll have to buy a new strop, and maybe more paste.
