An excellent book on language development: what it is, what to expect, how to help, when to seek help
This is an excellent resource for anyone concerned about a child's language development. It explains symptoms and diagnoses, details exactly what speech problems sound like, outlines speech development by age range, suggests what to do at home to encourage language development, and describes how a speech pathologist can help. It can be read in just an hour but it's information is solid, and invaluable for assessing and responding to what might not be a problem at all. A grandmother encouraging her toddler grandson's speech development, I cannot recommend this highly enough.

Nothing more than common sense
We bought this book with high hopes that we could help our son with his phonological issues. But we found that the content did not live up to the title. I was unable to find specific, helpful exercises to actually teach a child to pronounce certain sounds. Some of the activities included are "sing 'Old MacDonald' with your child," or "count the number of letters in this word," "speak clearly to your child" or "read a book to your child." In other words, they are all LISTENING exercises, rather than ACTIVE exercises for a child with phonological problems. My son has trouble with the sound of the letter "l" - the page of exercises for "l" includes activities like "making lemonade," making "lists" and "lick a lollipop." There is no advice on how to help the child who has trouble with "l" sounds. No activities to teach the child correct articulation. This is not a handbook, or a workbook, but more a guide for spending time with your child and nothing more. Any good parent would be doing these things already! But I found very little help with actual speech.

Very specific exerices to help out!
Finally a book that actually helps. It gives concrete examples and exercises you can do at home with your child broken down by specific sounds that need work. My son just started speech therapy (he's 3) twice a week and these exercises and great to do along with the ones suggested by his teacher. We're seeing a huge improvement in only a few weeks -- and he was diagnosed with a severe phonological disorder.

wonderful speech book!
My son was having problems with his pronunciation of certain words, and much to my surprise i was not speaking correctly either! It has been a long time since i had to think about the basic sounds of speech and this book broke it down in fun easy to understand ways. i love the parts where it tells you the individual sounds of each letter like the "V" sounds like a mosquito vvvvvvvvvv, or T sounds like a clock ttttt. Really helpful and we enjoyed reading it and understanding more about speech!

Autism and Speech Challenges
Simply stated, I purchased the book for helping my grandson who is on the autism spectrum and has difficulty pronouncing certain sounds. Time will tell how effective Dougherty's manuscript will be.Also, I can share the book with parents whose children have articulation problems. In my last years of teaching before retirement, I perceived that many more children have distorted speech patterns than when I began teaching in 1962. Early intervention seems the most successful approach in forming habits of speech and expression.

informative
This book helps with understanding speech disorder or delays. Does not help parents to teach child how to speak. It recommends to take child to speech therapy and to follow through with the therapy sessions.

very informative
My wife read this book and the feedback I heard was all positive. She found the book to be very informative. It helped her understand our childs speech situation a little better.
