But her story does NOT end there, but you have to get the book to find out how she was saved! I loved this book. I weeped with joy to know that Maggie was saved by the love and desire of school children and a community. Based on a true story, it is all too familiar. Abandoning and disposing of our pets is epidemic. Anyone looking for a pet need not ever go to a pet shop. Please visit your community shelter and adopt an animal there. You will save two lives. The one you bring home and the space that will then be opened for the next animal. Also, please don't walk past the black animals. They are often overlooked for not being initially interesting. Black Animal Syndrome. There is a pet to be rescued for everyone! This book is wonderful for discussion about the joy an animal can bring to a home, and also how important and rewarding it is to contribute to animal welfare.

A beautiful story that highlights many issues, animal abuse, black dogs being last to be chosen, pet parenting responsibilities, ADOPTION, advocacy, and coming together as a community to DO SOMETHING! The fact that it is children who initiate the action and the adults support and help them will really inspire my students to be empowered when we learn about the sad things that happen to our beloved animal friends and how we can help them. EVERYONE CAN DO SOMETHING. Start with this book, and see what u can do in your town.

This book was so touching! As a teacher who loves my dog, I try to teach my students about proper pet care and keeping dogs for life through stories about my own pup and literature. This book will definitely help with that! It also shows how kids can impact society.

Loved this book! I have read other books by this author and purchased two copies, one to keep and one to share with a friend's child who loves dogs. The story is lovely and meaningful. A great gift for anyone who loves dogs, has rescued a shelter dog, or anyone who has that instant connection to humankind's best friend.

Good book!

With brilliant simplicity, the author brings up very powerful points during the narration. A compassionate story that every child and adult should read.

This was an excellent story. One slight flaw is that the pictures were so dark. One teacher told me that this and other similar books were so "sad," although they all had happy endings. I think the pictures were a reason for this impression.
