Great Book Series for 10 Year Old
I love this book series. My son and I read this together at the end of every night. He looks forward to it, and would rather read this than watch TV. Challenge I find it to be straight enough to read, while challenging him at the same time. Forces him to use his context clues for understanding phrases, sayings and words that he's never heard. The writer does a really good job of mixing in these concepts in her writing. We'll alternate reading chapters and I'll spot check to have him define certain words or explain what's happening in various parts, and he's been able to keep up very well. Fiction/Non-Fiction One of the reasons I chose this book series is I love the fact that we're killing two birds with one stone here. The main characters in each book are fictional, but the settings are real historical events and people. This creates a great blend learning a ton of history along with the flexibility of imagination of the non-fictional protagonist. As a history buff myself, I love giving my kid the historical contexts of what we're reading. I find that he's slowly learning a lot history while enjoying the character arcs.

These are a great step up for young readers. My son had read the graphic novels of this series and now to have the regular books is a good transition. To somewhat know the story but the requirement to read instead of rely on graphics has been really good. The titles of the books seem crazy for kids but the stories are always really good.
