Eliot Ness: A stack above other law enforcers
Well, here it is. The final season of "The Untouchables".This show had one of the longest shelf- life's of any series despite being shot in black and white, which only lends to it's authentic feel to that era. Apart from the Capone episodes all other stories concerning the Untouchables are inaccurate and fictitious, although, the characters portrayed in most episodes were real. Robert Stack was perfectly cast as Eliot Ness and is the best version portrayed by any actor.Plenty of action in this series. I believe that the show was cancelled not by falling ratings but by lobbyists complaining about the amount of violence on T.V. Well this was about gangsters of the prohibition era. What did they expect. Many well known actor's had early roles in this series like Jack Lord, James MacArthur, Clu Gulager, Telly Savalas, Peter Falk,Cameron Mitchell even Barbara Stanwyck who was a big movie star at the time appeared in two episodes which can be seen in this season. It was a stroke of genius to have Walter Winchell, who was a news reporter in the thirties, narrate the series. It gave the show a sense of realism. The masterful musical theme set the mood for this series and takes me back to when I was a child sitting on my father's lap watching this show. This is a great, great, great show. A television classic.

The last but not the least !
I read a lot of commentaries about this 4th and last season. And they're problably right but what Desilu did with this show is amazing and the quality of writing is still there. Thanks to CBS, they finally released the 30 last episodes. In France, we have only the three thirst seasons and not this one ! So I enjoy myself to own it and to finish my collection. Picture : 5/5. Sound : 3/5. Extras : 0/5. For me, "The Untouchables" stay the best TV Show of the 50's. It always reminds me when I was a kid (In France the show was broadcasted in the 70's). Robert Stack will be forever Eliot Ness in my heart and my mind. RIP : a great man and a fantastic actor !

Skip the first two episodes!
The first three seasons of this show were great, but I was hesitant to order season 4 volume 1 based on some of the reviews on Amazon. Also, both volumes of season 4 costed much more than seasons 1-3. However, I liked the previous shows so much, I took a chance and bought S4-V1 to see for myself. After watching the first two episodes, which were really slow paced and had way too much dialogue from a couple of the guest stars who droned on and on like actors in a Shakespearean play, nearly putting me to sleep, I figured I had made a big mistake getting this set. I was about to eject the DVD disc and just write this season off and watch something else, when I decided to give it one more chance. This was a wise decision as the remaining episodes were for the most part almost as good or equal to the ones in seasons 1-3. As in previous seasons, lots of actions scenes were recycled to save money and the Frank Nitti character only showed up once, but many of the guests from earlier seasons like Telly Savalas, Lee Marvin, Frank Sutton, Ed Asner, Milton Selzer, Nehemiah Persoff, and Frank de Kova reappeared as different characters. I will be ordering Season 4 volume 2 soon to complete my collection, and hope it's as good as volume 1. As other reviewers have stated, it seems Desilu was trying out ideas for spinoff series and one of these involved Barbara Stanwyck and Ed Asner as investigators tracking down missing persons for the Chicago PD and two episodes were devoted to this. Maybe the new series was to be called the UNTRACEABLES.

The Fourth Season was full of action packed viewing. We enjoyed each episode because each story was different and the actors were fantastic. There were no problems at all with the DVD's and we will always order from Amazon because of this. There are no delays on delivery and the DVD's are always in perfect condition. If you are looking for action movies order the Untouchables you will not be disappointed.

Rats! Having bought the first 3 series of The Untouchables, I found that the 4th was still available only as Region 1 DVDs. But wait, I have a Sumvision 1080p Phoenix DVD Player, which is region free! So I was able to buy the two box sets of series 4 and enjoy the crisp, nicely restored pictures of Elliot Ness stories from the prohibition era. Terrific!
