This is decent, but it IS a Singer reprint.
Well, this is all fine. It is a decent book, and it was a decent book when it was published as the Singer Sewing Manual for Tailoring.I needed it for my workrooms, so I don't care too much that it is a total duplicate, but was like um...They didn't actually update ANY of the pics, what they did was color shift them so that the rich greys, fuchsias, and teals of the late 80s early 90s are now instagrama-fied. No problem, but you can get that Singer book for about 1¢ and a couple of bucks shipping, so do that instead. Here are the ISBN numbers I am comparing:This: 978-1-58923-609-7 or 1-58923-609-2That: 0-86573-241-8 or 0-86573-242-6So just be aware, decent book for almost all home sewers who want to get into tailoring and haven't had experience.Just same/same with the two.I included a picture to show what I mean. They didn't change anything really. The graphic designers just messed with the cropping and color setting.

Is it worth it? (Sewing Edition)
How to use this bookMaking Selections:The standards of tailoringSelecting a patternSelect a tailoring fabricTailoring Plaids and stripesInterfacings for TailoringSelecting LiningsSpecial Notions for TailoringTips and Tools:Cutting& Marking toolsPressing EquipmentTools &Stiches for handworkReally liked the small section on Pressing and think they should have added more photos to show the difference in pressing certain garments and what it looks like when completed accurately. This example only shows pockets but I do think it was overall a good example. The section on padstitching should have been more indepth for instance you are marking pad stitching lines but do not state how far apart or where to start and end. the tips section goes in a bit more but still needs definition, for example: what is a roll line?(Explained later in the book) How do you determine if the stitching lines should be 1/4 or 1/2?This section could have definitely used more instruction on how to actually complete the stitches. The tailoring tacks were well explained IMO.Before You Sew"Getting a good fitPreparing the PatternPreparing the Fabric Fitting is a very difficult subject and requires experience. I don't think this book did the subject justice by tackling just a few fit issues on a jacket. Excellent section on making interfacings from pattern pieces, the illustration accurately capture what should be done.Tailoring Techniques:Constructing the jacketTailoring a Notched collarTailoring a shawl collarTailoring PocketsTailoring SleevesTailoring HemsFinishing Techniques:LiningsPartially Lined JacketsTopstitchingButtons and ButtonholesResourcesIndexSo is it worth it? Yes. For the price this is a good beginners book. This is a very basic tailoring book. Due to not explaining the stitching In-Depth I had to remove a star as you will definitely have to locate other sources on how to accurately hand stitch if no previous knowledge is had,

Thorough, concise, complete.
Great book; for learning, for referencing, and for doing. But don't expect to buzz through this one and come out on the other side a tailor. Nope. If you're an advanced-intermediate sewist as I am, you'll need to take your time reading this book. It's chock full of information, valuable information from start to ending. It talks about fabrics, linings, tools, patterns, fittings, construction, …You get the picture. If there's one flaw in this book, it's that the photos (and there are many helpful photos), the photos all display the makings of a woman's jacket. I'm just saying that if you're tailoring a man's jacket/coat it would be nice to see.... But hey, they're just photos, the words and instructions throughout the book are all gender neutral. Trust me, you won't be disappointed w/ this purchase.Keep in mind, just as tailoring takes patience, learning to tailor takes patience too. Enjoy.

Bad layout on Kindle version
This review applies to the Kindle version only. The formatting for reading on your computer or on another e reader is terrible and makes the book practically unusable. The pictures are tiny and often only one picture to a page, so even the simplest techniques involve having to enlarge the picture and scrolling through multiple pages. The small size of the picture also means it is really hard to find a specific technique. I can't even really tell how good the book is as it is taking too long just to flick through it.

first jacket success with this book
I recently completed my first tailored jacket using this book for guidance and it came out great. I imagine that if I had followed the pattern instructions the final product would not have been as nice. This book walks you through every step- from interfacing selection to buttonholes (bound and machine), collar tailoring (notched and shawl, with custom, machine, and fusible methods) to lining insertion (by hand or machine). There are tons of different techniques presented, all illustrated with photographs and descriptive captions. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is considering making a tailored jacket for the first time or someone who wants to learn tailoring techniques beyond typical pattern instructions.

A wonderful book for the advanced dressmaker.
Tailoring is the ability to take a thin fabric that is properly cut, interfaced and interlined, so that clothes looks as rich and confident as a much heavier fabric. This is an excellent book for dressmakers who wish to move on from advanced sewing and pressing techniques into the different but professional world of tailoring. It doesn’t cover pattern-making which is a whole other skill that takes years to learn, but it does provide ways of adapting patterns and making clothes fit better so they look professional; it bridges the gap between home-made and handmade; something I battle with all the time. This is not a book for a beginner but for people who already understand how to create good clothes that are properly cut, stitched, pressed, eased, interlined and under-stitched. It even explains the proper use of pinking shears: which exist to thin-down seams, (not to prevent an edge from fraying as I was taught but could never understand).Learn to steam-ease a waistband without making darts, learn three different methods of interfacing, learn how to cover poppers so they are less visible, discover how to thin down and under-stitch bulky seams.Fantastic photos, clear information and explanations of three different methods of garment construction throughout; dressmaking method, tailoring methods and an in-between level - all in all this is a really useful book.

A must book if you are tailoring
I was struggling with a jacket pattern so I looked on Amazon and having seen 'inside' decided that this would help me. The reason? Every stage is shown by pictures, really clearly. There is also different ways to add interfacing, classic, machined and fused. When I came to my pocket welts, I decided that the material was too thick for double welts so I followed the instructions for a single welt pocket. There are instructions to show you how to add a half lining and a full lining. It's a sensation and I have it open all the time on my table alongside the instructions. It's saved me in what has been a challenging make.

Fantastic book but not so fantastic condition
I did a tailoring class years back but forgot everything I was taught. This book is brilliant easy to follow easy clear instructions with lots of photographs with clear illustrations. Downside was the book looks like it has been stored for a long time as the plastic film is lifting on all the corners and some of the edges, and looks like it will lift on the front cover too so really not happy about that, when I order a new book I expect it to be in perfect condition.

Great information
They say a picture is worth a thousand words and in this case they are so helpful to understanding the more complex sewing that is required to make jackets and coats. Pictures show the various methods required so this is a very worthwhile investment to assist your sewing, an excellent book.

Clear detailed instructions of the different techniques.
This was just what I was looking for. I want to teach myself some of these techniques and have a go at making something quite tailored. Great illustrations. It explains why things are done the way they are, and the differences between tailoring and dressmaking. I am learning a lot. I just have to find the time to put it into practise.
