The Marx I know and love...
After reading "Das Kapital Volume I", I had to continue reading this awesome analysis! To begin, this is NOT a read based on dogmatic views of communism like Marx's Communist Manifesto. The Capital Volumes are actually based on a more scientific basis regarding the inter workings of a capitalist economy. In this volume, Marx describes a detailed analysis of the buyer and seller and how they are to be found (within the marketplace). Unlike Capital I, this book is much shorter and easier to follow. But be warned, the terminology is quite old, so I HIGHLY suggest taking time while reading. If one is looking to understand true Marxism, then please read the whole Capital series. I found it easier to read the Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith before tackling these volumes. It will provide an easier roadmap and critique of capitalism before venturing into other realms of communist theory. Overall, five stars!

An astonishing achievement
I hate how some of the other people reviewing the volumes of Das Kapital fail to see that at least in this book, Marx wasn't advocating anything. It was his analysis of the fundamental features of capitalism. This book deals with the cell of capitalism: the commodity. This book is simply Marx's analysis of how the labor in the production of commodities becomes the commodity itself (commodity fetishism). He identifies the three circuits of capital required to produce commodities in a capitalist society: money capital, productive capital, and commodity capital. The third chapter I found to be very interesting because in this chapter Marx identifies two forms of consumption, these being productive consumption and personal consumption. This created the circular flow of money to becoming either money capital or productive capital. Highly recommended for anyone looking to understand how societies function and how capitalism really works.

The First Marx Brother
Book 1 has all the meat of theory and analysis and the predictable self destruction of capitalism. This one can be employed as bedtime reading.

Must read
Although Marx's Capital remains a difficult read, it is essential for understanding the current economic mess, in particular the growth of unproductive speculative capital. With speculative debt reaching nearly ten times the level of the world's productive economy (GDP), it appears that the barons of capitalism have sealed their own fate. Find out why.

Must have it in your library!
If you have Adam Smith's "The Wealth of Nations" you have to have Karl Marx's "The Capital" to understand the economic discussion of "more state" vs. "less state" and also the ideology behind "class struggle."

Understanding economics starts here.
The length of the book might be a set back for some people like it was for me, but once you get into it you will find yourself pleased with the depth of understanding that Marx presents.

These are his economic treatise.
After reading the first 3 volumes these books are works in economics. In fact there is an effective 4th volume, The Theory of Surplus which I have not read. I won't add to the previous descriptions of his ideas as this would be superfluous. What I have read for a summary of all his many publications is Karl Marx Selected Writings in Sociology and Social Philosophy, T.B. Bottomore and Maximilien Rubel , Pelican 1963. A full list of all his and Engels books are listed. I have also read The Communist Manifesto and also The Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Bonaparte, describing the attempted revolution of 1848? His main sociology works seem to be The German Ideology (GI) and Grundrisse (1857-8).Or at least these are the books I would consider reading next in this line of exploration. The first 2 volumes are also available in one book from Wadsworth . Karl Marx Selected Writings in Sociology and Social Philosophy, T.B. Bottomore and Maximilien RubelWadsworth

Great opportunities to reflect on the failures of our current ...
Great opportunities to reflect on the failures of our current "Capitalism is wonderful" and perhaps we can find something in the middle for an economic system that works. It requires an open mind and thinking. Read David harvey's books and check out his videos on YouTube.
