The Holy Spirit: A Guide to Christian Theology (Basic Guides to Christian Theology)

I am studying to become a pastor and I am reading this as a requirement for my curriculum. Karkkainen is a brilliant man and author. He is quite funny in person as well! He spoke at my college and apologized if we had to read any of his work!it is true that his writing style can be laborious to read, I enjoy the richness of his research and understanding in the subjects he writes on. I also have his book on Christology (also required reading). It is not an easy read if you are not quite brilliant yourself. Just be prepared. It is, however, like I said, very thorough and taught me a lot. I will keep it in my library for future reference when serving in a church to prepare my own sermons, talks, discipleship times with people and personal edification/review. If someone asks a question I can't answer off the top of my head, this is a resource I would use as well.Cheers!

When looking at the Holy Spirit the author handles the subject like rare diamond or Jewel. Just as a diamond reflects differently with the slightest move of the gem, so does the Holy Spirt. How do you capture this with words? This has been a terrific attempt.Looking at the history of mans understanding was useful, but thankfully on the last page the author noted that just as the Holy Spirit is eternal, there is no attempt writing a final chapter.

Basic overview of pneumatology and its development historically/globally. Helpful to see some basic level of engagement with a broad swath of thinkers and traditions. Definitely a good work to consult as a prelude to further research.

This was a great book for an introduction to the diverse opinions of the Holy Spirit through time. The author also showed how the denominational differences that have occurred in the past and still exist in modern time. This elusive, but ever present part of the trinity needs to have more attention and this book is a great stepping stone to study and pondering about our connection to God as three in one.
