Great product - very pleased with the result!
Recently bought a table and bench set for the new flat I would be moving into. Picked up a used one and decided to renovate it as a project.Decided to go for this as it provided a finish as well as a stain in 1. Prior to this I had used a clear satin lacquer on a pine coffee table and had been disappointed with the result (despite drying faster and not having to sand between coats).First step was to remove the pre-existing paint/finish off the table. Useful to use a stripper or something abrasive for this. Once removed, I sanded the coat down to a 120 grit finish. Gave it a quick wipe with white spirit and a tack cloth before applying this poly varnish.I must say, I'm extremely pleased with the finish. I ended up giving it 2 coats for good measure (sanding lightly with 200 grit between each coat). I found that it took about 4-6hr to touch dry. I ended up leaving it overnight.Overall it looks beautiful and feels great.Few tips I'd give to any other beginners,1. Make sure you're using a well ventilated room or space that's free from dust.2. Make sure your surface is sanded and smooth.3. If you make a mistake while applying the varnish (e.g. bit too thick or thin)…don't stress to fix it- if you are going to, it has to be done quick as it thickens quite rapidly. If you try to spread a thick patch after some time you ruin the texture and gloss of the finish.4. Pour the amount out that you think you need and avoid dipping brush straight into pot. I used the base of a cut 2L plastic bottle for this. This ensures you don't ruin the varnish and get it to last longer.Hope the review helps people see what kind of finish can be achieved! Very pleased and will definitely be buying again if needed!

A varnish full of pigmentation bits-useless
I wanted this to give a high gloss walnut finnish to a classic car dashboard. Despite thoroughly stiring the tin, fine sanding and wipe with white spirit then a tacky rag, I kept getting bits in the finnish. I tried excluding dust by painting a bit in a airtight box. still had bits. I think the pigmentation is not properly dissolved in the varnish. I sprayed the glove box cover in the air tight box , with a clear poly varnish and got a perfect result. My conclusion is that this product is a waste of time and money. Rustins web contact page for help doesn't work either. Technical help not available via phone when tried. Give this varnish a miss, stain first then spray with polyurethane gloss varnish. The only positive thing is amazon refunded me almost the full price as it took so long to be deliverd.

Not oak colour in the slightest
If you want clear varnish then its fine, if you want to stain pine to look like oak, run a mile, this stuff has no staining ability in the slightest. I have used other manufacturers stain in the past & in no way did they fail like this product. We rubbed each pine top down to the bare wood, to within an inch of its life and it FAILED big time. In fact I wasted hours & sweat for nothing.I am a very keen DIYer aged 61 with tonnes of experience.

not bad for "dipping" 28mm gaming models
Bought this as a cheaper alternative to Army Painter Strong Tone Dip just to see how it works, its actually pretty good for this - though the tin needs to be somewhere warm before you use it to make it a bit thinner - I may try diluting a bit next timetakes a few days to fully harden, and like all oil based stuff has a bit of a whiff, but actually looked very nice once done, amazingly glossy though

Stuff of nightmares
Had put3 coats of rust oleum varnish on my table but wasn’t getting the dark colour that I wanted so got a tin of this devil’s muck. Did the legs ok but when I started on the top it was going on like old mayonnaise. I then spent three days stripping the whole thing.

Fantastic vanish.
Fantastic vanish that goes a long way. Bought to upcycle an old pine tv cabinet into a bathroom sink unit. Waterproof and durable. Highly recommended!

Really good and easy to use.
It spreads easy and its easy to catch the drips. Doesn't run easily and covers well. Only took 2 coats to really cover a shelf. 4 days to harden completely (1 day to to ensure it won't 'dent' when standing things on it) and it was good to go. I stood triumphantly in front of my husband and said "see?! It's GREAT!" because it is great, despite him constantly being like I was building a nuclear bomb. I would like to point out that varnishing is NOT like building a nuclear weapon no matter what anyone says.

High gloss finish.
Excellent product , purchased this to revarnish six dinning chairs. It's a little browner than the original but a fine finish. Two things to note first you must be a fan of a shiny finish it's certainly high gloss, second you need apply sparingly with a fine brush. Can be thinned for two coats, but one is ample for most jobs.
