Delicious wheat-free couscous
I love the convenience of couscous for speedy meals, but wheat sensitivity makes regular couscous a bad idea for our family. Dari barley couscous has a pleasant texture and delicious, nutty flavor, and it is prepared as easily as the semolina varieties of couscous. The Dari six-pack comes contained in a tough plastic bag for damage-free shipping. This is the second time I have purchased this product from Amazon, but the first time was many years ago. I was concerned about freshness this time around when I read the reviews, since I imagine this is a niche item and they don't move the stock very quickly. The last thing anyone wants is six boxes of rancid couscous. I was glad that this wasn't an issue for us; the expiration date was well in the future and the couscous smelled and tasted fresh. We prepared some last night, and paired with some grilled vegetables and meat, we had a meal that both adults and kids loved. This is basically the only source I've managed to locate for wheat-free couscous, so I don't have a basis for comparison of the price, but I think that it's reasonable at just under $3 a box ($17.52 for six). Wheat-free foods can get pricey. This is about half the price per ounce of Ancient Harvest pasta, and it is ready for eating in a fraction of the time. It's nice to have some variety of choices for grains/pastas. I highly recommend trying Dari barley couscous.

Love it. I love barley couscous so much more ...
Love it. I love barley couscous so much more that the ubiquitous wheat versions. It has a nutty flavor that keeps my spoon digging in for more. The four stars only reflects that this falls a bit shy of the lamb chops that I often consume with it.

Rancid
When I opened the first of 6 boxes I could immediately smell a rancid odor. After it sat in the open air for a while I could hardly detect an odor, so I went ahead and tried it in a recipe. I could definitely detect the rancid flavor in the finished dish. Yuck. I have ordered this product from Amazon before with no problems, so I wasn't that concerned that it is a non-returnable item. Now I'm out the $ and have six boxes of rancid couscous. Note: these were about half-way between their production and expiration dates--not super fresh, but well within their usability dates.

perfect for preparing dinner fast
I love making couscous when I am in a hurry to get meal on table fast. All it takes is 5 minutes tops. I like the idea of using a barley based product. I think it tastes even better than the semolina based couscous, but my kids did not notice any difference. You can serve it with any hot dish or as the base for a cold salad. Great product.

PLEASE get this item back in stock!
I'm one of those people who has mysteriously developed a wheat intolerance with age and can no longer eat many "normal" foods. I love barley and buy a lot of it, but pearled barley takes about 45 minutes to cook. Sometimes I hit the kitchen and I need something fast, something that feels substantial and yet comforting.Dari Barley Couscous, from box to plate, takes less than 10 minutes to prepare. (NOTE: Ignore the package directions for amount of water, salt, and oil. Use twice as much water as couscous. Boil water, pour over couscous, let sit for 4 minutes. Fluff with fork, microwave 2 minutes, done. Add butter or oil, salt, pepper, cheese, whatever, after it's finished.)I've been making a luscious gluten-free, low-glycemic Greek-style salad with it - barley couscous, grilled chicken breast, cherry tomatoes, feta cheese, Kalamata olives, lemon juice/olive oil/oregano dressing. One batch of it makes about five or six great summer meals. Keeps in the fridge for up to a week... if it lasts that long. Please get this back in stock, Amazon! I'm down to my last four boxes!

Barley Couscous is good
I actually prefer the barley couscous to the regular. I bought some extra to give to a friend thinking it was gluten free, but I was wrong about that. No problem.
